Chapter 15: You’re Kidding Me

The sun was going to rise soon, and the volcano would erupt in less than an hour. The bunny Evangeline watched the horizons with her loyal giraffe by her side. Behind her was sheer chaos, as apparently during a game of Monopoly (which is a human game, and how a rabbit like Evangeline seemed to obtain it is unknown) there was a ruckus that had ended up in several cloud fights.

”The creatures behind me are idiots, Chachamaru,” the Dark Evangel started, “And I’ve sent the four most annoying animals into a suicide mission. Life is great.”

Chachamaru, a seemingly emotionless giraffe replied, “But master, they have completed some dire missions before and even survived against Mana. To be realistic is to not be overconfident, even if such situation seems advantageous in our favour.”

”That’s true. Perhaps I should just go and kill those hostages already. I’m getting sick of these animals…”

Meanwhile, in a deep dark cave that was guarded by a bear and several wolves…

”In the name of the arctic, I haven’t appeared for FIVE chapters! Am I a minor character or something!?” A little penguin yelled suddenly.

A koala standing next to her giggled, “What are you talking about, Haruna-chan?”

”Auuuu, I can’t believe I was captured for the third time…I’m so useless!” A small little hamster perked up, jumping around in bouts of sadness.

The biggest animal within the cave was a large cow, who assured the young hamster, “That’s okay, Natsumi. I could help us all escape at any time!”

”What? Really!? WHY DIDN’T YOU DO IT ALREADY!?” Haruna said.

”Because I know that a few animals are off doing something just to save us, it’d be a pity for them to risk their lives for absolutely nothing. Don’t worry at all, if we’re threatened I’ll protect you all! Besides that bear is a little dangerous, so it’s safer to just wait.”

”Yeah! Secchan will save us! She always does!”

Haruna grinned, “Alright then…I could say being in here is a plus. I’ve never found a stick with such a perfect edge before. Imagine all the pictures I could make, maybe even a story!”

”It’s so sharp…Paru can use it as a weapon too, right?” Natsumi asked.

”Well…if I do that, it might break…AND I DON’T WANT THAT TO HAPPEN AGAIN! OH NO!”

Konoka looked towards the entrance to the cave. She knew that Setsuna would save them as fast as she could. Yet the koala still worried, as if something just wasn’t right. She looked back at the horizon, and noticed the sunrise. It was beautiful, but at the same time seemed to indicate as if something was bad.

Everything started to rumble, like something had erupted from afar.

-

Several minutes earlier, back at the other animals sitting there waiting for the other four on an assassin mission to kill some animal…

”She said if I made 300,000 acorns with this game, she’ll give back Ojou-sama!” A white crane argued as she put a house on ‘Forest Lane’, “Why is that dog winning all the acorns!?”

A little seal was running (legs? O_o) back towards the other animals who were in quite a conflict. She went up to the owl and appeared to whisper in her ear.

”Asuna-san told me she saw four animals heading to the volcano…I think they’re making progress, Yue…”

”They’re running out of time, at this rate Haruna and the others will…” The owl stopped, looking down at the Monopoly board, “I’m surprised that even Setsuna-san is so gullible to that rabbit’s demands. As if her mind seemed to change when Konoka happens to be in danger…”

”Hey Eva!” Kotaro yelled, pointing at the dark long-eared beast of the forest, “How about a fight, huh? I demand Chizu-nee back if I can win!”

”I’m not wasting my time on a mere wolf.”

Kotaro growled, “No way in hell! You and I both know those animals you sent to kill some fox are as good as dead! It’s not fair if you risk their lives on those weaklings! Fight me and you won’t be disappointed!”

”Hmph, I refuse to fight you, wolf. If those annoying creatures can’t kill that damned fox and end up frying in the eruption, then I will kill that cow and the others…”

Kaede, who had overheard the conversation, asked, “What is your objective in murdering the fox, de-gozaru?”

”That fox did the most indescribable, disgusting, and despicable thing to me…” The rabbit started, and suddenly every animal present started listening.

”Back then, I was only an innocent animal, weak and vulnerable…and all I could do in life was to find food and live. It really seemed pointless, and yet I continued the routine…”

Sakurako was confused, and decided to grab all the acorns in the game of Monopoly.

The rabbit continued, “One night, when there was a terrible drought, all the animals around me couldn’t find food, nor water at all. I had to visit the local human farms and steal the little food they had lying in the soil. It probably angered the humans, as what I had stolen were their food sources, but everybody had to fend for themselves in the challenge of life. I hoarded everything I could take into my lonely den; all the rabbits around me had perished before I could return with food. Before I could even take a bite of my work, a fox entered my den…”

Sakurako took out a bag of popcorn, which other animals questioned how she took the thing out of nowhere. The dog proceeded to munch on the human delicacy.

”Foxes are carnivores, so I quickly came to the assumption that the fox came to hunt me for food. It was not so. That damned canine took all my carrots and never laid a paw on me. It had easily swiped me to the side and took the food I had stolen…”

”You sent Ako and some idiots to kill a fox that stole your CARROTS!?”

”It’s strange, isn’t it Setsuna? That the fox only took the carrots…and not the other bits of food, it must’ve done it on purpose, to piss me off…”

Setsuna was fuming with rage now. The evil rabbit had sent many animals to dangerous missions to save the hostages, mainly her Ojou-sama, from being killed. Every time they had gone on these seemingly impossible tasks, it had to do with carrots. Carrots for god’s sake, these orange vegetables definitely weren’t more important than Ojou-sama!

”Y-you’re a monster! You’re evil! Why did you take all those animals as hostages!?” Setsuna yelled.

”How about this, crane? I swear on carrots that if those animals kill that fox and bring back evidence, maybe its head, I will definitely free those hostages,” Evangeline said, “Now you better hope they’ll be back in forty minutes.”

”Grr…”

-

”AND THOSE ARE THE ONE THOUSAND AND ONE REASONS WHY I HATE YOU-ARUYO!”

”YOU ONLY NAMED ONE, AND IT WAS ‘YOU DON’T PROVIDE ME NIKUMAN’!!!”

”By the way, where are Kazumi and Ako-aruyo?” Ku Fei suddenly said.

Yuuna looked around, “That’s odd. Oh! I think Kazumi asked us to guard Ako-chan! Hey, where is she?”

”Oh no-aru! We didn’t guard her! I can still smell her though-arune. Follow me!”

The two animals ran off deeper into the forest.

-

”It’s you!”

The shadowed creature could be seen smirking, “Of course it’s me, what’d you expect!?”

”Why’d you come down here? This isn’t your territory, and also, why are you guarding my lunch!?”

”Well, if the smoke covering the sky hasn’t occurred to your blind eyes yet, the giant mountain on the other side is going to erupt soon. I’m simply escaping from it,” it said.

The cheetah growled, “But then why protect that dumb bird? If you’re trying to take her for yourself, it’s too bad since I saw her first.”

”What I do isn’t of your concern,” the animal started as it picked up the canary gently and placed her on her back, “now get out of my way or we’re going to end up dying from the explosion.”

”HEY! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING! WHY’S AKO IN YOUR MOUTH!?” An otter yelled from afar, in front of her was a running feline.

”I was going to eat this bird as a snack to power my legs to run away, until I realized who it was…” the creature replied, “No time to talk, we got to get out of here.”

Ku Fei looked up at the sky, “Oh no-aru! Are we too late to kill that fox!?”

”There’s no time for that! We got to trust this animal with Kazumi and Ako and run the hell out of here!” Yuuna said.

The cheetah decided to just flee as well, since she didn’t want to get fried. She would have to catch the delicacy of a canary later.

”Hurry it up, you two, we only have minutes to spare,” the mysterious animal said.

Yuuna, who was lagging behind because of her handicap, ended up tripping on an annoying tree root. She fell flat on her face and injured her poor nose.

”Ow…”

“Yeah, a cliché tripping moment when we’re trying to flee,” The creature said, “Get a hold of yourself, otter! We don’t have time! Geez!”

”S-she…s-she called me an otter…” Yuuna’s eyes were sparkling in great happiness, “I could die now and still be happy…”

”Yeah, you WILL die now if you don’t get away with us-aru,” Ku Fei added, “Get on my back, I’m fast-aruka!”

Sayo had floated around all the conscious animals, but none had noticed her. She concluded that only Kazumi could see her and was tagging along as they ran through the forest, escaping the active volcano. The ghost noticed Kazumi’s bleeding, and nobody was helping her stop it, but she couldn’t blame them, since they were all running for their lives. The animals stopped at the edge of the river. They were following the large stream of water, but now it curved around them and was blocking their way out. The cheetah was large and managed to jump over the dangerous rushing waters of the river, but how could these animals get pass?

”Ah great, more obstacles-aru,” Ku Fei said. The feline looked around and saw some stones that they could jump on to cross, but it was incredibly risky since it was uncomfortably close to a waterfall.

”We’re jumping on those stones, try not to fall.”

The ‘mystery’ animal went first, skilfully jumping onto each stone as it got across. It almost fell into the water on the last rock, but managed to get across.

Ku Fei was a bit nervous, since jumping on the rocks would mean getting her paws wet. She also hated water, and couldn’t swim too, so falling would be terrible, especially near a waterfall. It also didn’t help that a heavy otter was on her back. She jumped onto the first rock successfully, feeling the icy water that touched her paws. Slowly, she jumped onto the next stone, then the next, and finally the cat started feeling confident, maybe too confident.

She slipped.

”Ahhhh-aruyo!!!!”

The unknown animal leapt at the water’s edge and managed to grab Ku Fei’s paws, attempting to pull her onto shore, “Good god why are you two so heavy!?”

”Kuu’s probably been eating more nikuman than she can handle, I bet,” Yuuna said as she clung onto the back of Ku Fei for her life.

The cat ignored the insult, instead focusing everything she could to get out of the water that she completely despised. Finally, the nameless animal pulled her out of the water, in which the cat puffed for air and sighed in relief.

”Should I carry the otter instead, cat? You seem tired,” the creature offered.

”It’s alright-aru. We have to get out of here now!”

”Kuu’s being awfully nice to me…” Yuuna mumbled, not enough for the feline to hear.

They continued to run as fast as they could and heard the explosion behind them. Ash and debris flew all over the place, one smashed into Ku Fei’s paw, but she continued to run in a steady speed despite it. The rocks started increasing and it was getting harder to dodge. They then saw the lava rushing towards them.

”I never should have gone to the volcano today. Then again, if I didn’t, I might’ve never seen these animals…” The creature said.

Yuuna asked, “Why are you helping us anyway? We don’t know you at all.”

”Didn’t you say you wanted to kill a fox? Have you ever SEEN a fox?” The creature replied.

Both Ku Fei and Yuuna nodded negative, which made the animal sweatdrop oddly as they continued to run insanely fast, “How the hell would you kill one if you don’t know what they look like?”

”We figured we’d just go into the volcano and kill every animal-arune,” Ku Fei said. The animal made an anime fall, but quickly got up and continued running.

”You know…I’m the fox you were looking for, then,” it revealed.

”What!? You’re helping us despite the fact that we came on this mission to kill you!?” Yuuna exclaimed.

The fox sighed, “You stupid animals are dumber than you look, aren’t you? I didn’t eat the stupid chick, and I protected the annoying canary. Now I’m here helping you run from the lava. Don’t you get it yet? I didn’t kill any of you because you’re my animals…”

”What in god’s name are you talking about?”

The canine continued running, and didn’t say a thing for a few seconds, concentrating on evading trees or rocks in the way, “You know who I am, but not as a fox.”

”Whaa? I am confused-aru.”

”No, I think I get it…” The otter started, apparently not noticing all the dangerous objects flying around behind them, “You’re…”

”CHISAME-ARUYO!” Ku Fei yelled, “I’M SMAR—“

THWACK!

A huge piece of burning ash smashed into the hind legs of the sprinting cat, which ended up tumbling down the hill they were fleeing on. Seeing as the otter was riding on the meowing animal, it had also fallen flat onto its face as well. They screeched to a stop at the bottom of the hill, in front of a cliff.

”If I had come alone I could’ve easily escaped myself, how the hell did they get here?” The fox growled as she leapt towards the bottom of the cliff.

”Ah! Fox-girl-person-Idunnowhoyouare--!! ROCK!” Yuuna yelled, as Ku Fei was out cold.

”Son of a—“

SMACK!

The only animal left standing was a handicapped otter, watching the huge debris and molten lava rush down the hill before her very eyes…

Plooooot twist! WOOT! Or is it a plot twist? I think I made it too obvious it was Chisame. I DID say to someone (the only person who reads this, Aoi-dono) that there would be five main characters of this story, one of which hasn’t been “introduced” yet. Yes, the quotes meant something. I also said you wouldn’t guess right if you tried to figure out who it was. I LIKE foxes, so I realized that making Chisame a human kind of in the way of…foxes, so I decided to do something so she’d appear as…a fox. Y’see?

Yes this chapter is like 300 words longer than usual, whoo.
