"'cause OH EMM GEE!"
Oct. 24th, 2008 01:30 amIt's as if you're in another dimension. Those you know act as if you do not know them...and you don't, since it's...incredibly different. o.o
Today's rant is about that. Now, it's not about my life or anything particularly important, so anybody reading my blog on my everyday life can stop here. P: It's more like a ridiculous "why the hell would you rant about that it's so silly/small/pointless/etc" rant. But now that we're finished with explaining, on to the actual rant!
I like my ears.
Therefore, what I listen to should be pleasing to those ears, yes? Yes.
Now, who here likes the valley girl accent?
Who here likes DUBS?
Yes, you can see where my horror is coming from...
Examples:
Now I'm not a BIG fan of dubs, but I'm not completely against them. Hardcore anime fans seem to be COMPLETELY biased against dubs and some of them don't even bother listening to them to see! Many people started liking anime BECAUSE of dubs. Now dubs are granted, not that great at times, but some can be decent. I just wonder though, what could they do to actually make them seem GOOD? Nowadays unless it's by the wretched 4kids, dubs don't seem so bad. Their names are kept the same (though they butcher the pronounciation -_-) and they don't really cut all that much. A few years ago it may have been different, but currently most dubs if not dubbed by horrible companies seem decent enough. However there's never been a dub that sounded good while the original ALSO sounded good. For example some people who watch the dub of something first is used to it and so finds the original odd. It's things like that that seemed to push the negative view of dubbing.
Now today I watched the dub of the Spring/Summer OVAs of Negima. Why? Because I was curious. I wanted to hear the voices. Many voices sounded rather different than the first anime, but they all sounded BETTER voice-acting wise. (They all improved in terms of their career at least) That doesn't mean their voices FIT the characters...There were also some new voice actors too, like Ako's voice actor took over for Setsuna's role, same with Zazie and Satomi.
Starting backwards, I can't really say much for Zazie since she had like three lines and then one in the entire anime, but she sounded good. She could have been quieter but eh, what can you ask for in a dub? :\ Satsuki had less of the "I am a fat person" voice but it was still in her voice a little. Ayaka sounded like Ayaka, close enough. Natsumi, blah same old. Nodoka sounded better...I could actually hear her, in the first anime I could barely hear her voice. Evangeline sounded much better as well. Chisame I have a problem with, as her voice actress might be the only person who got worse at voice-acting. That one point in the Spring OVA when they find her in the jungle was just atrocious voice acting. Blergh. Satomi's new voice was kind of cool but sounded kind of forced at the same time. (Like they tried to make themselves sound like Japanese Hakase P: ) Fuuka and Fumika were fine, so was Chizuru. Kaede sounded better, not as nasally. Chao sounded...like...uh...well better than most. Mana sounded fine, Sakurako sounded alright, Makie sounded GREAT actually. My only problem would be that her kind of voice doesn't fit her character but it was superb voice acting. Setsuna's new actress is MUCH better, and does the "I r a lesbian" act pretty well. Haruna sounded like Sawa Ishige, o_o. Konoka sounded the same but less squeaky so that's good. Ku Fei sounded less squeaky as well, so much much better. Madoka also sounds less squeaky, lol. Chachamaru calls Evangeline MASTER and not MISTRESS! Hooray! She sounds fine too. Misora sounds a little deeper than usual but it still works I guess. Asuna sounds great (probably the best voice of them all). Misa sounds a little high, Akira sounds dumb actually. (Like how a stereotypical teenager sounds like...that's not what I view Akira...like, of all characters, why Akira...) Ako sounds rather....uhm...her voice is quite, well...normal? But it's slightly too deep for what I view Ako's voice should be, it doesn't sound 'cute' is what I'm saying. Yue's voice sounds even MORE monotome and even kind of bitchy now but I think that still works, lol. Kazumi sounds EVEN MORE LIKE A VALLEY GIRL AND lost all her squeakiness, which was supposed to be close to Jellophish's voice ;__;. Yuuna sounds as high as ever and not as passionate as how Madoka would do it, and Sayo sounds MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH better than before. I think I give Sayo the greatest improvement award. :D
Negi still sounds like crap.
Yeah. But how is this the opposite? Well, let's filter those people eh? Drive it down to just YUUNA AND AKO like omfg. Yuuna sounds high...Ako sounds too deep...WAIT! Where have I heard this before!?
AHA!
The live action of course.
In the live action, Ako has the deepest voice of all the sports girls and Misora. Like, maybe even deepest of the entire CAST! I dunno. She also looks the tallest and maybe even the oldest...like wtf!? WTF!? Totally UNAko-like.
Yuuna on the other hand has the gentlest highest voice and doesn't look...well I unfortunately do not like how she looks at all. In fact calling her Yuuna is an insult to Yuuna. No offense, actress. In the actual live action there is a Makie episode, where Akira has a pretty large part in it. (Apparently she cares about Makie) while Yuuna and Ako hung around each other as the background. Waitwaitwait...that's the opposite of Negima!?. Actually no, in Negima!? they pushed Misora into the sports girls and...waitwaitwaitwait...Misora is pushed into the sports girls too in the LA! However the LA has all five of them while Negima!? ditched Makie. Whut. Like wtf is happening yos. Also they had random Ako-in-a-nurse-outfit scenes in the LA too. That meant Yuuna had the least screentime of the five girls (yes even Misora because she was the leader in the concert song). WAITWAITWAITWAIT!!! Yuuna had the MOST screentime of them in Negima!? AND EVEN MORESO IN THE OAD! And she had MUCH more than Ako in the OVAs, in which Ako had next to NIL! Whoawhoawhoa hold your houses here. Yes I said houses. I meant horses.
Compare this ALL to the original manga and their Japanese voices. Ako = fake voice. Whenever her seiyuu sings her voice is inconsistent in EVERY BLOODY song, therefore confusing the song-listener experts in identifying voices. Yuuna is Madoka's regular voice with a bit of ZING! Though in the latest OAD the ZING! seems to have disappeared. Yuuna's singing voice is SUPER EXTREMELY consistent. Good on Madoka. Now in the actual manga I rate the order of screentime as Makie/Ako (maybe Ako more?), Yuuna, and then Akira. (Oh poor Akira is rejected in every comparison...except the LA where she's second but the LA fails) And the order of their CURRENT popularity as Ako -- Yuuna -- Akira -- Makie. HOLD IT! Totally more opposites! In the beginning MAKIE was first! But AKo has always ranked high. Bloody Ako! And to think I'm writing a story about her! Yet everybody hates her!
You know I think I lost track of what this rant was supposed to be about. Basically I'm just remarking the incredible inconsistency everywhere. It just doesn't work when there isn't consistency. I mean Ako had less of the fakey voice in the OAD, which is even more inconsistency. In fact Ako is the most inconsistent character EVER. I mean seriously.
Oh wait now I know.
KAZUMI SOUNDS MORE LIKE A VALLEY-GIRL AND LOST HER STRANGLED DUCK VOICE. That was the only redeeming thing about her dubbed voice. My title is a quote she actually fucking said. CAUSE OH EMM GEE! Good lord Kazumi you have NO BRAIN! You're a whore, a bitch, and FAT just like the OAD makes you out to be because of this stupid BLOODY voice.
The injustice to Kazumi Asakura just baffles me...
Stop ruining my favourite character.
