I realize I have no comments and it's only been 5 hours since my last
update, but I just WANTED to write this, to not toggle my memory into
the pits of never return.
How I Got my First Hamster:
Well, it all started some spring/summer/fall (I don't
remember..>>) day on the year of 2001, where we had experience
with pets before, except all those pets lived in water, even the frogs.
As I saw (and was freaked out, lol, I'm not afraid of blood but I get
freaked out by dead bodies, even squished ants, lol) the fish and
froggies die, I wanted another pet, a FLUFFY pet. I mean, you can't
touch wet pets and all you can do is look at them, of course, I was
only about 10/11, and had no knowledge of the great "responsibility" of
furry animals, well I wanted a dog.
I mean, I'm not called Spot for no reason, but dogs and cats and birds
and bunnies and rats and chinchillas and tigers were a no-no, said my
mom. Well, at that time I don't think I knew what hamsters were, or
maybe I thought they were fancy looking mice, but yeah, I didn't know,
but then I and my family headed over to a friend's house for dinner.
They had a dog, a cat...and a guess what? A HAMSTER!! Actually, 2
hamsters, but they hated each other (actually one of them did, the
other just liked food and laziness). They were dwarves, unbearably
cute, and unbelievably adorable. And the first thing that popped up in
my mine other than "look at all that poop!" was..."I WANT ONE!!!"
Well, it took a bit of persuading, possibly because...my mom and
especially my dad hated stinky pets, or another thing to add to the
house that also eats and poops. But, they knew a breeder where those
cute little fuzzballs came from. (They weren't great breeders by the
way...>>) And my mom considered it. But we couldn't take them
home another couple of weeks because theyw ere newborns and need their
lil' mommies.
So, my friend gave me his second lazy not hating hamster. He preffered
the meaner bitey one because it was better groomed and skinnier, the
one he gave me was pretty fat, lol. His original name was Cyber, but
eventually got the name, "Hammy". Hammy became my first hamster, and
I'm glad they gave me him, he bit a bit, but other than that was a very
tamed hamster. He was also lazy and food-loving.
Well, because this was so sudden, Hammy's first home was a flower pot.
(lol, not a nice place to put them). But, I wanted my mom to spend
money on a cage really quick, since...it WAS A FLOWER POT. So, we did,
but we got a white bucket and stuck him in there temporarily until the
cage time has come...The cage came! (And it sucks, it's taped together
today, lol) I put Hammy in there and he had trouble looking for the
food (at first I put it upstairs on the 2nd level, but he didn't know
how to get up so I moved it on the ground--for now.) He rarely used the
wheeel but when he did it was a great sight to see. We didn't have a
water bottle yet, so we served it on a dish. (And to anybody
considering a dish for water, don't do that, get a water bottle) At
that time he had no bedding, so we really weren't reayd for a hamster
yet, but as I've said, I was 10 years old.
And then the breeder's little hamsters were old enough to leave home! I
brought Hammy along to see if he would get along with the new hamster
(Hammy isn't agressive, a bit bitey, but not agressive) So I felt he'd
do well with another companion, unlike my friend's hamster (Who had no
name but was called Squirrel at times) He brought a female baby
hamster....and we didn't know yet (since we thoguht it was a male). So
Hammy and the female was on the table, Hammy kept following the female,
but the female was young and Hammy was...let's say an adult (OMG!!!
CHILD MOLESTATION!!!). Well I had studied a bit on hamsters by then and
determined the sex of the hamster, we brought it back. (And hopefully
Hammy didn't do anything to it, let's hope he isn't a father, >>)
And got a different one.
This hamster was adorable, and the tamest thing EVER. It never bit in
its whole life, so I was lucky because I had inexperience. Although
originally called Hyper, he earned the name Hobo. And Hammy accepted
Hobo quite easily, I probably had the nicest hamsters in the
neighbourhood. (I probably had the ONLY hamsters in the neighbourhood,
lol) Well they had to both been males because we didn't get any babies,
lol. So now we have two successful males who like each other, and even
though Hammy spent part of his life alone, he accepted Hobo easily.
They often had wrestling matches and Hammy was always dominant. (Not
really, Hobo just became submissive without a fight, lol, such low self
esteem). In other words, these hamsters were little wussies! Oh well,
that's ok. Anyway, before I got them, these guys enjoyed eating cat
food, which I ehard is bad for hamsters (now), but it didn't really
hurt them at all. But now that I have them i didn't feed them any cat
food.
My mom tended to buy the crappy cheap hamster food from Superstore, it
was fine, but I felt they deserved more, lol. We had a huge pack of
sunflower seeds and they got some occasionally. (Well, I ate them all
in the end, I'm so greedy, xD!) The cutest moment between them was
probably when Hobo slept on top of Hammy, or (Hobo's smaller than
Hammy) Hammy on top of Hobo, that was adorable and kind of weird
because Hammy's beginner and Hobo's under him, lol. They were always
cherished in my memories.
Me and the kid downstairs played with them A LOT, so they slept at the
night more often, but we played with them so much, it was just
adorable. When they moved out there was this room downstairs with no
holes/closets/gaps under the door/ and a very high window they got no
chance of reaching (not that they would, theyr'e pretty lazy). It was a
big empty room and I let them free in it. Surprisingly they seperated
and both got the opposite corners from each other as if they had a
fight and weren't talking to each other.
It was my most memorable moments (but I filmed them with the camcorder,
lol). Hobo was the escape artist, because I was an idiot (Hey, I WAS
10), and if Hammy ever did escape, he was always in the kitchen.
Must've smelled food. My washroom was colder than the kitchen so Hobo
escaped there all the time, although I thought he just wanted to cool
off from the heat wave but it was also a bit cold so it got a bit
worrysome.
Hammy almost died twice in the middle of his life, because he fell on
the kicthen floor and days after that, a rock solid ground with a thin
rug. The 2nd time he was bleeding, but great ol' mom saved his life.
Hobo seemed to not fall at all, thank god.
Anyway, after all that, these guys were just so into each other until
the time came. Hammy was getting lazier than usual (If that's possible)
and slept a lot more. They had passed 1 year and half of life and were
still happy little hamhams. Then Hammy got a stroke and I was very
scared. His eyes were still open and he was still breathing (my mom,
being very naive to information about hamsters) said he was probably
starving and picked him up and put his head into the bowl of food. We
had to go out to dinner so we all thought for the best, when we came
back, Hammy was as if he was reborn! He was constantly hyper and ran
everywhere, the wheel or around in the cage. he probably scared Hobo,
lol.
But, he would not live forever, in the middle of Summer, Hammy on the
2nd last day of his life, was running around like a hyper freak, but
the next day, he wouldn't even move. he just sat there staring at the
wall and breathing, I took him and Hobo out for a run on the bed. Hammy
just lay there and breathed, moved a little bit. Hobo went everywhere
like a hyper hamster would. The very next day in the afternoon, Hammy
was sleeping and I let him sleep. He then stopped breathing at 2:30pm.
(In this room I'm in, O.o) We buried him and gave his last wishes. He
was one of the best hamsters I ever had.
Hobo didn't live long after that, he was quite lonely and started
catching some illnesses, but eventually died of old age two weeks
later. We buried him right next to Hammy, where he would've wanted.
Those two made a great step towards my life that day.
And about 2 weeks later, we went to the worst pet store ever and got an
albino hamster! We named him Vulcan Max and a week later found out it
was a girl but never renamed her. The story of Vulcan Max wasn't as
long, as her life was half as long as Hammy and Hobo's, but her tale
will be told at another time, in another place. (Feels like Max the Cat
in that kiddy show on treehouse, =D)
Hammy and Hobo were great hamsters, tamed, yet lazy, but really friendly. I will miss them as I miss Vulcan Max today...
