As you all know...well, you probably don't actually, but you SHOULD all know, regardless if you like my fandom or not! *narrows eyes* Okay, maybe not, but as far as I know, the latest character ranking poll has Yuuna at 7th spot, clearly stealing it away from poor Kazumi who dropped like a bomb down the rankings. D:
So I thought to myself...what caused Yuuna to get 7th? What caused Kazumi to drop so low? I actually don't have an answer to the second question. I thought about it for a minute, but I couldn't figure it out. Maybe everybody else that passed her did more things than her so she never really dropped, just stayed where she was? (And 8 people leapfrogged over her?) Someone said the time of voting happened after the pactio, but it's really on the borderline. I would think it happened before, because loliness and pactioness should naturally boost someone's rank. I don't expect her to ever break 7th, obviously, but certainly not drop 8 spots. I guess it will remain a mystery. In fact the other mystery is how Kazumi got to 7th in the first place, twice. I mean all she did from Volume 9 to 18 was announce, and didn't really appear much. That made SEVENTH!? Yes, it's quite a mystery. Maybe that time when she looked REALLY COOL (saying an epic line) boosted her up, but that was one panel...and this is 7th twice. Unless doing that can hit you in the high ranks twice...o_O.
Well, that may remain a mystery, but I clearly have the answer to the first question. Why DID Yuuna hit 7th?
Yuuna has always been floating around the top 15 or so. In fact, her highest rank was 6th, and that was the first poll ever. (6th >> 9th >> 14th >> 13th >> 8th >> 11th >> 7th)
Now, it's not just the Japanese fans who like her, people out west do too, and so do I, Kirami, and Aoi-dono actually. I don't know anybody who blatantly HATES Yuuna or anything, maybe they're neutral or don't care about her, but mostly people find her cool.
Why does Aoi-dono like Yuuna? Easy. Madoka Kimura.
Why does Kirami like Yuuna? Well, from a pattern-point, she likes Reno, who as far as I've heard, is quite an idiot in the movie, and she likes Ku Fei, who also is rather an idiot. This "idiot" point leads to why the Japanese like Yuuna.
First, I've heard the Japanese (keep in mind this is just a generalization) like small girls. Cute, smaller, girls. Yuuna is not small, but she can be cute, and moe.
What does moe mean?
Well, the meaning is quite disputed. But as far as I'm concerned, someone cute. Oh, but not just someone cute, in fact they may not even LOOK cute, but they have to "act cute".
A "submissive" personality. While someone may be badass and hardcore and awesome and shiz, which is definitely not moe, if they even show submissiveness, it will be moe. This is quite a bonus if the person isn't often like that. A feeling of submissiveness is when they blush, feel embarrassment, act clumsy, be innocent, or something around that reasoning. When they look weak, and act somewhat feminine. A tsundere is moe because they blush a lot whenever they "deny their feelings". That's what I depict as moe at least. Other people may say different, but as far from my limited anime knowledge, it's what that means to me. For example, Evangeline is a badass lolita, obviously her loli-looks help, but in personality wise, she shed a tear when Nagi petted her on the head. Stuff like that is certainly moe.
It is almost always associated with girls, like the Saimoe is an all girl competition, except the winner isn't always the most moe because it becomes a popularity contest...>>;
Secondly, another thing I've heard. The Japanese love their "Spiky-haired heroes". This would usually only apply to like, male-filled shounens. People always like Naruto the most in polls, stuff like that. (Or was that Sasuke...wait, why the hell do the Japanese like SASUKE of all people? Eh, perhaps a poor example.) A spiky-haired hero tends to be the main character. They're usually idiots, have a passion to win or something like that, and they're also fun and they can be mischievous. I think I basically described Yuuna. Certainly, Yuuna is not the main character, not by far, but who out of the sports girls is main, do you think?
Makie? Maybe. Ako? Perhaps. Akira? Certainly not. Of course, Yuuna is the "ringleader" when it comes to making trouble. Such as when they followed everybody to the gateport, and Yuuna jumped ahead, got followed by the other girls and they got transported. If Akira even follows Yuuna, then she is not the leader. Makie is an idiot, yes, but too much of an idiot. Ako does not have those features.
For example, during the third day of the festival when Chao's strip robots attacked. There was a point when everybody was giving up (of the mundanes) and Yuuna was the one who convinced them all (yes, ALL. THE SCHOOL.) That they cannot give up, or lose, or at least stop. That is the sign of a spiky-haired hero. Also, a spiky-haired hero has some sort of "mysterious power/background". Yuuna is not normal. She has magic in her blood, but it's mysterious because even she doesn't know anything of the sort. Therefore, Yuuna will always be the one stronger than everybody else besides the main cast in terms of magic. (besides pactios and stuff)
She also has a whole chapter to herself. WITHOUT NEGI. Akira's chapter involved Negi, Ako and Makie's miniarc involved Negi. The other three's character development come mostly because of NEGI. The sign of a spiky-haired hero is that they don't have to rely on another character because they can grab all the development THEMSELVES. That is the sign of being the MAIN character. However, this reasoning seems to work on MALES more. Well...Yuuna's a tomboy, who can be feminine too. There.
One argument that Yuuna is UP THERE is because of her recent "growth" in the chest area. No, that argument DOES NOT WORK.
Who are the other people with big breasts? Chizuru, Kaede, Mana, KAZUMI, and Haruna are all bigger than her. Ayaka is possibly bigger than Yuuna too. (but Yuuna may have outgrown her and MAYBE Haruna or EVEN Kazumi) Which one of those characters are in the top 15? Kaede, and how high in the top 15 is she? #14.
Kaede is ONLY at #14 because she is involved in the story the most out of all those girls. She's been there since the beginning, knew of magic quite early. She is also very cool and can fight and did NOT ever switch sides (Kazumi and Mana did, however Kazumi reached 7th WHEN she was at the other side, that confuses me greatly. >>;) Haruna doesn't give the story much, just there to summon monsters and give humour relief. You got to do MORE to be at #14. Kaede did reach #5 once though, but that was early on and she had character development right from the start. (And how many characters had character development then? Very few.)
It's not like Yuuna is that big either. Of those 6 above, she is shorter than them all. Imagine that. Most guys you know would want a girl shorter than them.
Finally, Yuuna is hot. Then again many of the girls are, but it is still a factor on her popularity.
But why do people out west like Yuuna? Well, if she has backstory and development, people will naturally like her. They do. How many people like the cheerleaders or twins? Not many, since they haven't really DONE anything. Yuuna also has inner power, stuff like that. It's kind of similar to the Japanese reasoning, except they like spiky-haired heroes. There are millions of people who find idiot main characters annoying in the west. The thing is, Yuuna is not the main character. Also, the people in the west probably DO like big chests, so yeah. :X
And why do I like Yuuna, you ask?
After all, I am a great hater of annoying idiot main characters.
Well that's just that.
Yuuna is NOT the main character.
That is why I like her. She's not stealing all the spotlight, and everything that happens is NOT because of her. But she acts like an idiot spiky-haired hero. I like that. Whenever I write stories, I usually throw my favourite character into the "idiot main character" position. The problem? It's OOC.
Well I finally have an answer to that. Now that is the reason I keep drawing her and giving her major roles in every fanfiction I write.
But of course, my favourite character is Kazumi Asakura. And maybe why she dropped is because she is definitely not everything I just said above, besides the fun part. But to me, I like her because she is simply...not obvious. She's cool, badass in a way, and does everything for her own gain without trying to ruin others (like she didn't know that revealing magic will turn people into ermines, and when she did, she quickly changed her mind in her ambitions). She's not evil, and she will not betray people for herself. She is not like that. I'm still angry at the person who says she has potential of betraying people. Damn, they know nothing of her character. In fact, the thing she hates the most (and the ONLY thing she hates) is great evil. That means Kazumi likes...everything else! It's too bad she isn't moe or anything, but she has that badass factor with her. Sayo is enough moe for me. (Good lord Sayo is insanely moe, maybe that's why she jumped 8 spots!)
But the mystery of Kazumi being at 7th twice...is forever a mystery.
This has been Spotto.
