base breakers sadden me!
Nov. 26th, 2011 02:02 amJust watched the newest episode, so SPOILERSsssSss
APPARENTLY not many people liked this one and the last episode was a base-breaker as well. Which is funny because I used to dislike Rainbow Dash, and season two is really making me like her for some reason. She was so stupid this episode. :D And the last one there were a lot of awesome shots of her and excellent quotes. I can't exactly say she's being flanderized considering Rainbow Dash didn't even GET that many episodes in the first season, so I think she's still Rainbow Dash. I am COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY EXPECTING random misguided fans to pick Pinkie's character apart because she was displaying the TERRIFIED PINKIE trait that was prevalent in Luna Eclipsed (also a favourite episode of mine this season :D) but as we all know from her line in that episode, sometimes being scared is fun. They might be overplaying it a bit much though.
I will say her voice hasn't been as high this season, and her regular Pinkie-ness doesn't seem to be there at the moment. I've yet to see her break the fourth wall or do something truly random (and I hate using that word too but I can't figure out what to call it besides BEING VERY UNPREDICTABLE) and she hasn't been quite as unpredictable this season. Of course it might have to do with her lack of focus this season, no episodes on her yet. Stuff like Luna Eclipsed kind of took a rather obvious route with her as comic-relief rather than the witty Pinkie I watched in the first season.
Nonetheless, the episode was made awesome due to Rainbow Dash obviously, and how much she failed. I think some fans expect her to be that awesome and almost flawless Rainbow Dash in all those shipping fics that I do not read. (Or however she's characterized in those things, I don't read them after all) Well that has to be the reason they did like her because I mostly only watched her on screen and I didn't think she was all that great. Season 1 kind of gave Rainbow Dash all the reason to BE a braggart (well, more of one) in terms of being the reason everyone has a Cutie Mark, and her winning that best young-flier competition, and saving a bunch of ponies including her idols and then hanging out with her idols and being able to go Mach 10 or something, exploding in an insane nuke rainbow. Seriously. She was like SHE CAN DO ANYTHING IS SUPER AMAZING and those flaws she had are focused on a lot more this season. Good!
I am somewhat disappointed of who Mare-Do-Well turned out to be. I REALLY REALLY hoped it was Applejack, and Applejack alone. It'd just be so awesome for her character and the fact that it's all of them kind of sucks (but Fluttershy being proud of the flyby is ad'awwable 8D) and Pinkie Sense returning is pretty cool for continuity but it just feels more fractured since it never kicked in for ALL THOSE EPISODES in between Pinkie Keen and this one. It's like "oh hey I have this plot device we all forgot about for a year! I MIGHT AS WELL USE IT". And if she had it the entire time there must be PLENTY OF PONIES DYING she could've saved and probably didn't....or DID she...?
But people complaining about Pinkie this season, as in not being quite as Pinkie as the first season...I believe it's a valid complaint. In a majority of episodes Pinkie had a significant part of, she sang a song. It doesn't have to be a three-minute spectacular, but even something as short as a Hop, Jump, and a Skip would've been fitting. Season Two? ZERO SONGS. The only song so far is a duet between Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash, and while I LOVE Find a Pet, these two are the last ponies you'd expect singing, especially so enthusiastically with each other. (They are nothing alike, Rainbow is not someone who spontaneously breaks out in song, and Fluttershy is too shy to do so. I suppose her crazy interest in animals caused her to initiate the song, but still) Pinkie sang in the second episode (technically the first as a two-parter pilot), the third episode (Ticket Master) TWICE, which makes up for no song in episode four. In episode five with the Griffon it was more of a Pinkie-focused episode so a song probably wasn't needed (she sings when she's happy and she definitely did not spend the episode happy) and then she had no part in episode six, but Dragonshy came a Hop, Skip, and a Jump. No part in episode eight, but she has an Evil Enchantress in episode nine, then intro'd her Polka music in Swarm of a Century. Joined in singing Winter Wrap Up and Art of the Dress, sang Cupcakes in Call of the Cutie...you see where I'm going with this!?
It is rather distressing being a Pinkie Pie fan. This is exactly as I feared, her only role is to be comic relief, and it's not quite the same comic relief as last season.
I'd like to start off by saying some of the best parts I like about MLP is the subtlety. Lesson Zero is not one of my favourite episodes, but while everyone else was either paying attention to psycho!Twilight or brutality!Fluttershy, or Rarity being over-the-top over-the-top, or Dash's sonic nuke, I saw Pinkie Pie hop towards the picnic with a basket that floated away into the sky. There was absolutely no point to that scene whatsoever but it was amusing. This might possibly be her only case of fourth-wall breaking of the season, but many argue she was looking at Fluttershy. :\ I also of course enjoyed Pinkie's comfort scene that I embed'd in an earlier post. It was so d'aww worthy, and quite easy to miss. (This is why I do not believe in watching the episodes only once, but some people do. Their loss.) The little animation Easter Egg in the second episode counts too. (Pay attention to Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie in this scene, also notice Rarity poking her head out in the end :D) I loved Fluttershy's scene in Luna Eclipsed enough that the scene alone would propel the episode to my favourite of Season 2. I can't think of a subtle thing for Sisterhooves Social besides actually predicting Rarity was within the mud due to the blue eyes (which was pretty genius) and Cutie Pox had the Hazmat Suits. I LOVED the Hazmat Suits. May the Best Pet Win had probably my favourite shot of RD ever (not to mention the awesome song) and this episode? I'd have to watch some more to catch anything, but RD saving the grass or opening the peanut butter or using her hoof to plug up the dam (I mean that in itself was stupid-central but then she took it off to pat herself on the back LOL) I also liked Fluttershy being proud of the flying part (I totally mentioned this already didn't I? And Pinkie Pie's "S'alright" line!)
I think the reason so many people are complaining about this episode is the fanon itself. I'm not much for the fanon, I like ponies for cute ponies and occasional stories if they're enticing and well-written. I don't read shipping fics that much at all, and usually avoid RD fics. (My soft spot for Pinkie/Fluttershy has to do with a pairing I've loved for a very long time....it's on my default icon ;) ) So people wound up with strange fascinations for minor/background ponies like Derpy Hooves or Trixie, and I couldn't care less. They get their hopes up for one of said minor character being the Mare-Do-Well, and it doesn't happen. People also were spoiled with RD awesomeness in the first season as I mentioned before, what with all her amazing accomplishments clearly ballooning up her ego further. It makes sense for her to act so entitled and pompous this season. When I watch a new episode, I do not go in with expectations at all. (Not low-expectations, just none) I'm just there to watch and enjoy, and I truly did enjoy today's episode.
I mean yeah, I hoped for Applejack, but my brain knew it was like 0% chance it'd be her. (Well, her ALONE) So to be crushed it wasn't Applejack would be very silly. It's like hoping to win the lottery and raging at the people running it when you don't win.
But yep, that is all. I'd figure I write it here because in two days my opinions will have died off from the hype and so I forget all the points I have. That is all from the land of Spotto.
(As for a side-note, I keep thinking assigning my friend Souless Rainbow Dash might be insulting to him because I don't think he quite likes Dash, or thinks of himself as her. I'd like to say that Souless as Rainbow Dash is fitting not only because I was somehow made Fluttershy (and thus, we are the oldest of friends among the people in Vent) but he's bold and very amazing. Yes he's not a super amazing athlete who brags all the time, but sometimes the comparison of characters isn't always that literal. He's usually the best at games with Cunchy (Who is Twilight, so that makes sense too!) and my brain was pretty much set in stone that he is Dashie. Do not take it as an insult at all because as Fluttershy, I look up to you and wish to be as assertive and awesome as you are.)
