Sep. 1st, 2012 06:13 am Quite tired and thirsty at the moment, but I recently read a fanfiction which had absolutely splendid writing. It was an AU!fic though and I'm not especially fond of those for Touhou in particular. (Other fandoms is fine but AU for Touhou bothers me for some reason) Fortunately the writing was excellent enough that I could still enjoy it.
However I'm quite the Keine fan and Keine is portrayed...ridiculously OOC in the story. There's probably a reason behind it because a writer this good, unless they had some personal vendetta against the character for some strange reason would not purposely write her like so. It just bothers me for some reason even if she has a relatively minor role in the story. The Keine I know is one of the nicest characters in all of Gensokyo. (Or well, perhaps nice is not the term here...perhaps "least selfish" fits better) And if you're wondering how she's portrayed, she seems to be a close-minded abusive teacher for whatever reason which really goes against how Keine really is like. I'm not saying Keine is not allowed to have alternate interpretations...in fact one of my favourite twists happens in a comic series about Team 9 and Yuuka, and Keine is revealed to be rather sinister in that comic. (There's also this hilarious black comedy 4koma series where Keine is a horrible sadist to a child-Mokou...which I enjoyed as well)
Thing is the way it was revealed was so unexpected and executed so wonderfully, it made Keine one badass motherfucker that's for sure. In this fanfiction though? She's not only a minor character which I don't really care if she is or isn't, but a minor character who abuses the main damn characters...with a belt. A BELT. At the very least have her headbutt them! A belt, my word. I'm holding onto the benefit of the doubt that there's some reason behind this because it is an AU that likes to preach a lot of philosophy to emotionally lost characters. The only way I can see that happening though is if Keine gets a bigger role, which may or may not happen...I guess she will? Why make her randomly horrible otherwise?
Speaking of horribleness, I caught up with a little series I raged/ranted on several months back here. KOISHI'S HEART-THROBBING ADVENTURE. Why would I do that you ask? A whole bunch of them got subbed so I was quite curious. As gruesome and ridiculous it was, the more recent videos seem to imply that all the characters that go crazy aren't crazy for no reason. There's apparently a madness that is spreading rapidly and causing many youkai and even humans alike (well, Mokou) to start killing everything. The biggest reason I detested it previously is that I thought it was just a grimdark story for the sake of being grimdark, but all the drama and twists lately seems to lead to something potentially deep. No matter how twisted a story is...if it's deep, I'm going in. Funnily enough my favourite characters are all insane in the story...with the exception of Keine. (I can't tell, but it feels like the moment the giant UFO ship came flying in to fry all the humans that Keine got infected by the madness at that point...it was merely implied so I'm not entirely sure...the only fact we DO know is that Mokou burned half her face and torso off, so she looks like Two-Face from Batman! ISN'T THAT AWESOME!? Please have a bigger role both of you.)
Shou is probably the only one not insane of my favourites, except she's a poor hapless victim, so...we will have to rely on the few who aren't dead or mad. I am actually holding out for a happy ending for this series despite its graphic and if not nightmare-inducing, heartbreaking nature. (Watching the Sanae video with subtitles was...I like to think I don't cry easily, but goddamn was I in tears at the end of this one) Ran and Chen's demise still haunt me but I am looking forward to the next video.
And you know what? I love Keine so much I am working on a fucking fanfiction on her backstory, the same backstory with like...zero details in canon besides it being implied she became a half-youkai and wasn't born as one. I had to take creative liberties to make it work with little canon evidence, and I'm trying to involve Mokou as much as possible. (I know a majority of Mokou's character is Kaguya, the point of this story is to make Keine be a bit bigger in her endless life. She probably will never influence Mokou as much as Kaguya has, but I'd prefer if Keine had more than what canon shows. Also TAG DREAM KEINE IS BLINDINGLY AWESOME...I thought I should point that out) This is unlike my Murasa and Nue stories that had a lot of canon evidence backing it up. (Still my own crappy interpretation but at least they HAVE a paragraph or two describing them)
This writing business is always so time-consuming and so serious for me. A lot of stories out there have this thing called chronic-flashback syndrome, where they attempt to explain the motives and mystery of a character via convenient backstory. You could've met this person for one day and they might act strangely, but prod them enough for a few minutes and they'll spill their entire life story onto you! I mean it's okay occasionally but it gets a little old if it's done over and over again, and I really want to avoid using flashbacks, sometimes it's difficult to though. I'd rather reveal details of a character of how they are slowly, and probably not everything about them completely...leave a tad bit of mystery after all ;)
However that process takes a loooooong time and a loooooooooot of writing. You could have in your head EVERYTHING you've developed and made into your headcanon of some character, but since you're revealing it bit by bit through hints or whatever chances are your brain will start leaking all of these thoughts out and by the time you want to do a big reveal or something you forgot an especially vital part of the character....kind of annoying.
Ah well, I am rambling now. Need to get a drink and sleep, nighto blog!
