Yeah... SOURCE, by EROCKERTORRES

You know I keep attempting to type up RD rants here, but I'm never able to. They never finish, and the text is then erased, lost to the bottomless void of deletion forever.

I ran into a thread detailing the difference of Rainbow Dash of season one and of season two, here on Ponychan. (Please ignore the bit of bickering in there) Some of the points made are very valid, in fact I have never nodded my head and said "I completely and utterly agree" so very intently before. I know I said a few months back that I enjoyed Season Two RD better than One, but now that eighteen episodes have passed, my vantage point is a lot better.

First, I don't really care about RD. Well, I guess I care about her enough to attempt ranting about her countless, numerous times, but she has never really been my favourite character. I do not hate her or anything. I think she's valid as a pony in this cartoon and her presence is highly necessary, but I've always liked the others better. However I, like the OP of that post on Ponychan, did not agree with how she was portrayed in Read-it-And-Weep, which was not one of my favourite episodes at all. (On the other hand May the Best Pet Win/Sonic Rainboom is top billing, so it's not "RD episode? Bleh") It's fine if she takes up reading, it's just she has really strange reasons for not wanting to read. She feared being considered an egghead if she ever picked up a book, to be just like Twilight. (Let it be said that while I am not a raving fan of either Twilight or RD, I really expected and kind of hoped they had more interaction than what they got this episode. The season has been lacking in character interactions not segregated to race lately. (Pegasus hanging with Pegasus, Earth with Earth and to a lesser extent Unicorn with Unicorn) ) And frankly, she would never have reacted like that. The thread explains everything much better. I'll pull up some quotes since being a chan it'll be purged sooner or later:

Yeah, it was just the way that it was handled that seemed kind of off.

I always felt that the reason that Rainbow never got into reading is because, "I don't have time to stay cooped up in a room all day." She always has to be out trying new things, overcoming new challenges, performing new tricks, etc. Reading is just something that she never got into.

But in "Read It and Weep" it felt more like...instead of Rainbow Dash not reading because it conflicted with her interests, she didn't read because it conflicted with her image. That just felt really messed up. Sure, Rainbow Dash probably needed to have Twilight show her that reading isn't all that bad if you find a good, exciting book that fits your interests. But she didn't need to go around thinking, "What will everyone think of me if they find out I like reading?" I just never thought that Rainbow Dash cared what others thought of her. She does things because she likes them, not because she thinks that other ponies thinks she likes them.

Anyway this post isn't here to just throw around the fascinating points Rainbow Dash fans are making, I'm extending this to a bit of a shipping rant about RD. That's primarily why I've been trying to rant about her. You know how MLP is meant to break stereotypes, so that girls shouldn't all have singular and dumb dreams of finding a man and wearing clothes? Well, RD is meant to break stereotypes as well. Just because she's a girl doesn't mean she can't be awesome! However, her appearance, voice, and hobby passion make many fans immediately shoehorn her as a lesbian. I'm not going against RD shippers here, shipping of any sort is completely fine because shipping itself should be not taken seriously anyway. It's just a fun, cute little thing to imagine, something that will never be canon but makes your heart go squee, but I know while not all fans who claim RD is a lesbian are thinking this way, some truly believe that since she has a rainbow mane and acts like a dude that she must be a lesbian. This leads to Rainbow Dash being a rather popular suitor in the fanon world. Frankly, I want to rebut everyone who claims she's a stereotypical tomboy. I was a tomboy myself, and RD did not exhibit any of these following behaviours:

- Hatred of dresses
- Hatred of pink
- Hatred of girly-girl things or of girly-girl people (eg: Rarity)

She was fine with the Gala dress. She did not raise a complaint about participating in a fashion show. She didn't mind helping Rarity with measurements. (and her single complaint was how boring it was instead) She squeals like a fangirl when she meets her heroes, or gets to hang out with them, or well, anything with the Wonderbolts. She is an athlete but certainly not a tomboy. And even if she was that doesn't make her a lesbian, or make her straight, or make her bi or anything. A person's behaviour, personality, or appearance does not denote their sexual orientation. Are females not allowed to be competitive? Are females not allowed to enjoy high-speeds sports or anything of the sort? I don't imagine her, if she were a human, to be wearing frilly dresses, and maybe she would don something less stylish like that you would think of on a tomboy, but I don't think it would be because she cared about her appearance. That she purposely went out of her way to imitate the clothing styles of males, but more because it's probably a lot more comfortable to run and jump in looser-clothing that can potentially be damaged and ripped and teared without worry...in comparison to anything else! RD does not care about her image.

Well at least, according to that rant above, in season one.

I AM CHOOSING THE BEST IMAGES FOR THIS POST GUYS

If anything, Applejack's closer to a tomboy. She's the one who didn't hit it off with Rarity that well in the beginning anyway. She was going to wear boots to the Gala for Celestia's sake! She doesn't fit the definition exactly either but who does? A pony's society is far too different from the everyday human society to fit the notion of a "tomboy" in properly. You kind of need to wear clothes, be influenced by media and notice the trends of gender stereotypes which I don't see happening very often in Equestria.

You know I'm somewhat worried for next week's episode. RD hasn't be handled all that...well, this season but Fluttershy simply hasn't be handled at all, and they seem to have thrown the pegasi together a lot this season. I hope they didn't forget about how she was in season one and only looked at some sort of short tiny blurb that described her character and went off with that. The synopsis of the next episode is really weak, in my opinion. Of course like another post before... I guess I'll have faith in the writers? RD may not have been done well as she could have this season, but maybe that won't be like that for Fluttershy...I don't know, I'm even less confident than the other time. (Despite my worries previously being completely unfounded. I've been pretty happy with what they've done with Pinkie, Rarity, and AJ this season)
