I've finished chapter 16.

It is an epic chapter.

Unfortunately, not in humour terms, but whatever.

Before we begin, I must say, I did not think the story would really get up to 16 chapters (and it doesn't look like it's ending any time soon, either). I thank Aoi-dono for always reading it, for there is a point of posting it up in my blog then, xD.

Anyway, today this story is getting several extras.

A map I drew of HFF in boredom, xDDD:

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

And now...fanart of it (or maybe just the sukas themselves from episode 19, but I'm just going to say it's for HFF because...>>)

First off, all of the main characters (besides Chisame) of HFF, :D

THE FIRST TWO BEAUTIFUL THINGS ARE BY AOI-DONO, PLEASE GIVE LOTS OF LOVE TO HER BEAUTIFUL ART:

Kazumi teh chocob--*hit by a tomato* CANARY!

Ku Fei the tiger, a grand nikumanarian.

And crappy stuff I drew:

Yuuna the otter, WITH A GUN.

Ako the newborn chick (still?), rawr.

And finally, Sayo the...um, what was it again? Clione or something? Let's just call her a ghosty sea snail.

BEFORE WE BEGIN THE STORY, A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS:

LET'S GO! *cheerleader cheer* Sakurako! Misa! Madoka! YAY AOI-DONO! READTH BEGIN!
Chapter 16: Death

”What’s that rumbling noise?” A dog finished her popcorn said.

The rabbit who was watching the sunrise smirked. She turned towards all the animals sitting there, wondering what was going on.

”The volcano has erupted. If I were you I’d go about a kilometre or two away from here. We’re not too close to the danger zone, but debris will fly around and maybe kill some of you,” the dark rabbit explained, “After all, they still have a few minutes to return…if they can, that is.”

”I’ve lost all hope,” Kotaro said, “I beg of you…I’ll rejoin you, do anything if you free Chizu-nee and the rest of the hostages…”

”No. Your only chance is those four animals.”

”BUT IT’S IMPOSSIBLE FOR THEM TO KILL A FOX! WE DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE!”

”I thought getting the carrot back from that moronic big wildcat was impossible, but I figured they’d need more of a challenge this time. Anyway, I’m heading to the cave to kill the hostages.”

Setsuna yelled, “No! We’re following you and defending our—“

”Chachamaru, take care of them. You and some wolves.”

”Yes, master.”

-

“I’M STILL CONFUUUUUUUUUUSED!!!” Yuuna yelled as the rocks came tumbling down. Sayo was going insane trying to tell Yuuna to push all the animals off the cliff, as if something below would help them, but the otter could not see her.

The otter looked around and noticed a strong gust coming from the other direction. Sayo caught her attention with the wind. She walked up to the edge and saw something below. The otter pushed each unconscious animal off the edge and jumped herself, just before the ashes and lava came tumbling down.

They landed on a fissure of the cliff, which led to a cave that she’d never seen before. Yuuna quickly dragged all the animals in, and then lava splashed onto the surface that had fallen on. The heat was exhausting the otter.

”I think I permanently killed my leg…”

The young otter sighed in relief as she sat against the cave’s walls. Everything felt very warm since they were surrounded by molten lava. She noticed all the animals unconscious on the ground before her. Then she realized that amazingly, the fox was in fact the human who had taken care of them all. Yet wasn’t that impossible?

“Guuu…Y-yuuna?”

Yuuna noticed the young chick finally wake up after all that chaos.

”What? W-where are we? Yuuna-san?”

One final rumble and it seemed as if all the lava and ash had passed. The entrance was sealed by the debris from the volcano.

Ako looked around, but before she could really take a good look, an otter’s paw clapped over her eyes, “Ehh? What are you doing, Yuuna-san?”

”Since you seem to faint whenever you see that, I figure you shouldn’t be seeing anything right now, unless you want to faint,” the otter said, “Take a nap or somethin’…”

”But what’s going on…?”

”Technical difficulties.”

”Eh?”

With that, the otter pressed on the little chick’s shoulder, and she passed out.

”Aruuuu…” The sound of a cat echoed in the cave.

”Ah! Kuu! We’re stuck in a cave! Whatdowedo!? I can’t walk no more! Hey!”

Ku Fei got up, rubbing her hind paws and groaning for a bit. She crawled over to Yuuna who was across from her. She stopped before she even got halfway though.

”I smell nikuman-aru!”

”In here!?”

She sniffed the air and followed the scent. Eventually the young feline crawled over to the corner of the cave and noticed a cold nikuman under an unconscious canary.

”Has a bit of blood on it, but it’ll do-aruyo!” The cat was about to take a big bite out of the cold nikuman, when an otter stopped her.

”Hey! I was about to recharge myself with energy-aruka!”

Yuuna pointed at the yellow bird lying in front of the cat, “It’s not your nikuman…”

”Yeah well, Kazumi’s probably dead anyway-aru—HEY! If she’s dying then I can eat her-aruyo!”

”You’re a very caring animal, Kuu…” Yuuna sighed, “It’s like, that white bird only cared for that koala. I bet if she had to kill us all and then some to save that koala’s life, she wouldn’t hesitate…speaking of which, since the volcano went boom, aren’t we too late?”

Ku Fei looked behind her, “We could still kill the fox-aru.”

”But…if she speaks the truth, then she is our owner…in some odd…weird…way.”

”So?”

”…who feeds you nikuman.”

”THEN WE CANNOT LAY A CLAW ON HER-ARUNE!”

Yuuna rolled her eyes, “You’re shallow.”

”Isn’t that green monster thing YOUR enemy-arune!? Would you let it get away with murdering your friends and family-aru!?”

”…so Kazumi murdered all your friends and family?”

”No, but it’s still the same-aru.”

”…I’m not getting you, what did that bird ever do to you?”

Ku Fei stood raised her head, and looked at the ceiling of the deep dark cave, “You see, I am a cat. Kazumi is a bird. We are supposed to be enemies-aru.”

”Then why don’t you eat any other birds? Ako, for example, is one. Not that I’d let you eat her, but you don’t seem like you want to eat her.”

”I could’ve eaten Kazumi at anytime during all this…but I didn’t. I’m only considering gobbling up her now to put her out of her misery-arune. Plus, I respect Konoka and Setsuna-aru, so eating their adopted child would be out of the question-aruyo!”

The river creature inspected the unconscious bird, but Kazumi wasn’t unconscious at all. Yuuna could hear chirping come from the wounded canary but she couldn’t make out what the heck she was saying, as if the small animal was just crying out in pain with indescribable whining.

”…maybe you should put her out of her misery…”

”See? I was right-aru! Now for me to eat her all up-aruka!”

Yuuna turned around, “Guh, I can’t watch…”

Suddenly, the other bird stirred, and opened her eyes in horror as she saw the body of her closest family member sticking out of a cat’s mouth…

-
Somewhere else…

”Kazumi-san…”

”They’re MY bird seeds, you stupid crane! I saw them first! What are you, in love with that koala? Heheheh…”

”Kazumi-san, wake up.”

”Oh yeah, penguin? Can you FLY!?”

”KAZUMI!!!!”

The canary sat up suddenly and noticed that she was not making a comeback at a penguin that had nearly drowned her in the river.

”Where am I?”

The ghost Sayo floated around and then stopped in front of the fluffy bird’s face, “I’m s-sorry I yelled at you, K-Kazumi-san…”

”Ah! Sayo-chan! Where are we? Last time I remember that big-ass wildcat was going to eat me, and then this mysterious animal came out of nowhere with Ako in its mouth!” She rubbed her head, and then her wing, “Hmm, I feel sore. Why’s everything white?”

”We’re in your inner conscience.”

”My…what?”

Sayo sighed, “Like…your mind, your head, Kazumi-san. You’re unconscious.”

”Really? Oh yeah, my wing was injured…hey! Why isn’t it still injured?”

Sayo looked around, “It is your mind, Kazumi-san, you aren’t injured in your mind because you don’t want it to be, that’s why.”

”I’m confused, Sayo-chan…”

Sayo floated onto the ground and tried to sit, even though she couldn’t really, “You’re in a near-death experience. Whenever those animals accidentally got themselves killed because of me, I try to enter their minds to save their lives…but I haven’t been successful at all.”

”You mean I’m…dying?”

”P-probably…” the spirit started, “I helped Yuuna-san save you all from the volcano, but you’d been unconscious for too long…I guess I figured that something was wrong.”

”W-wait, the volcano erupted? Did we manage to kill that fox?”

The floating ghost lowered her head, “I could tell it all to you later, since right now we have to worry about…saving your life.”

”Aw c’mon, I survived starvation, being eaten, drowning, choking, being eaten again, and lots of other things! You can’t tell me my luck has run out!” The canary protested with a stubborn pouting face plastered on.

”Well, it hasn’t…it would be if you were actually dead, but you’re not. At least I hope not yet.”

Kazumi folded her wings together, like a person who had crossed their arms, “Then what can we do so I don’t die? All I’m good for at being dead is Ku Fei food.”

“According to this list here, commit a good deed, save a baby animal from its predator, give Sayo all your acorns—whoops, wrong list…”

”’Give Sayo all your acorns’? Never knew you had this greedy side to you, Sayo-chan…” The bird snickered at Sayo, making the floating ghost uncomfortable.

She quickly replied, “Ah! No! I didn’t write these lists! Really!”

”Suuuuure.”

”No! Honestly I didn’t write these lists! I mean I’m a ghost! What could I do with acorns!? Does it really look like I could try all that delicious nikuman everybody always talks about?” The spirit babbled on.

Kazumi asked, “Then who did write your lists?”

”Ahh…it’s a secret…”

”You’re not keeping a solid argument here, Sayo-chan…”

”I’ve been a ghost for a long time, Kazumi-san. I wasn’t sitting in that scary place doing nothing like a sitting duck…I was really lonely…so sometimes I leave it for a bit, to go to places close to me. I would watch a lot of animals everyday, just doing things an animal does. I always wish I could save all the helpless creatures from their predators but never could. I felt useless. A long time ago, as far as I could remember as a ghost, I entered the subconscious of an animal that was attacked by a f-fox…and afterwards man shot the fox, so this animal just lay there, paralyzed. It d-died a really slow death, but I tried to save her and it somehow ended up us brainstorming lists that could help others in the same predicament…”

Kazumi was speechless. When she was living in the cage before she arrived to the farm, which she called a hellhole; there were rumours among the animals around her of an animal spirit that seemed like…death itself. It would talk to you in your mind, and shortly afterwards you would die. Such a spirit was feared among many animals, for meeting it would be certain death.

Who knew that it might’ve really been Sayo?

”I guess she was joking when she told me that…all the other animals I tried to save…they didn’t live long enough for me to suggest stuff from this list…until now, that is. I’ve probably wasted a lot of time now…that’s why I didn’t want to tell you; because I wanted to save time…I’m a failure at everything!”

The ghost suddenly starting sobbing, yelling out many other various failures in her afterlife. She kept telling Kazumi how she could never do anything and that she was swimming in glee when Kazumi was the first animal to not die from her within the slaughterhouse, but now she’d end up passing away because Sayo never succeeded in trying to keep them from moving on within their mind. She continued to name more and more things that she could never do and then concluded that she should’ve never tried to save anybody in the first place.

”Stop it! Sayo-chan! Please stop crying! SAYO!!”

”I’m s-sorry…really s-sorry…that I can’t do anything for you…K-Kazumi-s-san…”

Kazumi suddenly spoke in a loud demanding voice, “…I’m not going to die.”

”What? To suddenly say that…stop being so arrogant, Kazumi!”

”I’m going to tell you what I told a very clumsy hamster when I first came here…that Kazumi Asakura can’t die that easily!”

”Ehh? Why do you need a last name?”

”…why does everyone say that?”

Sayo sniffed, “You h-have to be realistic, Kazumi-san…being a ghost a long time…it teaches you that.”

”Then I haven’t learned anything, Sayo-chan. Besides, I’ve lived this long, and you still haven’t told me peanuts about that list you have. I don’t care how unrealistic this sounds, but I promise you, Sayo, that I won’t die. Not today, at least, maybe when I’m an old wise lil’ canary yelling at all the kiddies about a great ghost named Sayo and all of them calling me crazy, but not today, not now.”

”K-Kazumi-san…”

Suddenly, the white ‘room’ they were in started losing its brightness. Everything started getting darker and darker, as if there was a sunset, without the sun all together. Finally the whole place ended up becoming pitch black. As this was happening, the spirit found herself jump-hugging the canary to the ground.

”What? What is it!?” Kazumi exclaimed, seeing the little ghost crying harder than ever.

”I-it means you’re going d-die RIGHT NOW!”

”WHAAAT!?”

-

”WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ONEECHAN!?!?!” Ako screamed, attempting to leap at Ku Fei but was unexpectedly stopped by Yuuna.

”YUUNA-SAN!? KU FEI’S ABOUT TO EAT ONEECHAN!? WHY ARE YOU STOPPING ME!?”

The otter gritted her teeth, “Kazumi’s in a lot of pain…it’s best to let her go…”

”No! LET ME GO YUUNA! STOP IT!” Ako struggled and pushed, but the size of Yuuna gave her a huge disadvantage.

”Geez, this bird is strong for being so young and small—“

”I HATE YOU YUUNA!!!” The bird yelled and pecked hard at the otter’s paw. She jumped out of the river otter’s grasp, jumping towards the striped feline who was about to swallow her only ‘oneechan’.

The fox, on the other hand, was actually awake the whole time, watching on the dramatic chaos in front of her. Nobody noticed her, but she did not try to make it aware that she had awoken, either. Clearly, something was definitely wrong.

-

”Ah, here we are…” Evangeline stepped into the bear’s cave, whistling as she neared the four animals captured at the back.

Haruna frowned, “What happened to the other animals?”

”They’re being taken care of, besides four of them, who are dead.”

“Y-you’re l-lying…” Natsumi mumbled, but it was enough for the Dark Evangel to hear.

”At least one of them is definitely going to end up dead…of course, if I can trust that fox of mine.”

”F-fox?”

”Don’t you think foxes make excellent spies? I’m going to have to watch out though, foxes are after all, very sly…well, let’s get this over with, shall we?” Evangeline smirked and raised her paw threateningly towards the four animals.

Konoka whimpered, “Secchan…where are you?”

-
