Chapter 19: Missed

Darkness loomed all around her as a young canary floated about, as if in space.

”Am…I dead?”

As if her surroundings replied to her question themselves, everything started to disappear, like being sucked into a vortex and the young bird could just watch as she followed suit…

”KAZUMI!”

”GAH!”

The yellow bird jumped up from the loud call she heard, and all the darkness became white. It was a white room; she was on some white bedding inside a white cage. The yell came from Yuuna, who was in the cage next to her, watching her.

”So you’re finally awake,” the otter started, “took you long enough.”

The small canary looked around, “Eh? Yuuna? Where are we? OH! THAT FOX KIDNAPPED AKO—“

An otter’s paw slipped through the bars of the cage and patted the canary on the head, causing the little bird to stop talking. She stared at the bigger animal next to her, who was oddly smiling. Kazumi was confused, but the warm smile given off from the mammal silently told her that everything was alright.

”Hm, I was wrong to judge life and death…I’m glad you’re alive, Kazumi.”

Suddenly, the door to the room that housed all the cages, which in turn housed a lot of suffering—erm, healing animals at the vet, slammed open.

”Why GOOD MORNING fine animals! How y’all doing today, eh? I’ll be your doctor today, and we’re going to have LOTS of fun, won’t we? Hahahahaha!” A man laughed loudly as he stood in the doorway.

Kazumi moved closer to the otter in the cage next to her, almost hugging the mammal, “Uh, Yuuna? I know this sounds like a completely Ako-thing to say but…I’m scared.”

”I know, I’m scared too, Kazumi, I’m scared too.”

The veterinarian edged closer to their crates, and noticed them. He put on his biggest grin and opened the door to Yuuna’s cage, and started scratching the otter’s stomach.

”Oooh, yeah, yeah, that feels good…lower please…mmhmm…”

”…Yuuna? I thought we agreed that human was EVIL!” Kazumi yelled, but the otter ignored her.

Kazumi started getting impatient with the mammal, “I said the human is evil! It’s scary!”

”…how can something like this be evil? Mmhmm…keep scratching there…higher now…that’s right…”

The enthusiastic man stopped scratching the little otter and then petted its head, “What a nice otter…well, time for your shot!”

”Eh?” Yuuna grunted as she got back up from the tummy-scratching. She was a tad irritated that the human had stopped, not that he could continue doing it forever…but she wished for that.

The only human in the room walked over to the sink on the other side and washed his hands, afterwards putting on some gloves. He then brought out a box and took out a rather intimidating, and long, syringe. After filling said syringe up with some sort of fluid, the man headed over to the otter’s direction.

”W-what is he going to do with that scary-needle thing?”

Kazumi grinned, “I got one of those when I hatched at the pet store…heh.”

”…and w-what exactly h-happened?”

”Well, it’s a needle, so…that human’s going to stick it into you. Won’t kill you, but it hurt when I got one…starting out life with a needle in you isn’t pleasant…”

The otter crawled backwards and hit the back of her crate, “But w-why would they do that? Why would h-he hurt me after that nice s-scratch…”

”I told you he was evil.”

Yuuna growled at the human, baring her teeth as she tried to avoid the man’s hands, but she was after all, in a cage and so had limited movement. The needle came towards her…

-

Sayo the ghost was a very lonely spirit, until she met Kazumi. So now she was a very happy spirit, and she floated outside of the large building Chisame had apparently taken the canary and otter to. Setsuna, Konoka, and Ako were waiting on a tree nearby as well, and all was quiet.

She remembered what the farmer said back when they were in that scary bear’s cave…

”…and that’s why I can be a fox and a human,” the vixen finished, all the animals were sitting in front of her like they were in a kindergarten class and had just heard a story. They were all in complete awe, besides those that couldn’t possibly have heard it, due to unconscious circumstances.

”Oh! QUESTION! OVER HERE! MY FLIPPER’S UP! YEAH!” Haruna yelled, waving her fin insanely.

Chisame pointed at the penguin, “What?”

”…can you explain it again?”

”…what? Weren’t you listening AT ALL!?”

”It’s hard to hear you with this pig sitting next to me yelling at my ear that her name is not ‘Misora’.”

Yuuna agreed, “Yeah I couldn’t hear you either, ‘cause of that Misora pig.”

”I don’t understand how you could just randomly believe my boar friend here when she said hi “Misora” to me, when I do not know who this ‘Misora’ is, and this boar here is obviously confusing me with some other pig she knows called ‘Misora’. I am simply the MYSTERIOUS PIG, and I am quite certain that’s the truth!”

Chisame growled, “Who ARE YOU, you damned pig!? You’re intruding here! I’m not explaining it again!”

”Aww…Chisame-chan won’t explain again, Secchan! I’m disappointed!” Konoka said, and the crane stood up to attempt to convince the fox for her beloved Ojou-sama.

”Please, if you speak the truth, explain once again for Ojou-sama. I also have not listened, but that is not important, and if Ojou-sama wishes to hear your story of your horrible past, then I request you tell us once again.”

The fox crossed her paws, “No, I am not explaining again. YOU HAD YOUR CHANCE!”

”BURN THE PIG ON A STAKE-ARU! LET’S BARBEQUE IT FOR LUNCH FOR INTERFERING WITH OUR LIFE-ARUYO!” The TIGER yelled.

Haruna said, “Hey! Some of us don’t eat pig! I’m on a strict fish diet! Besides, this pig here is cool! Her yelling was much more interesting than what boring stuff Chisame said!”

”But I want to knoooooooooow!!!!!” Yuuna whined.

”Then ask someone to explain to you who DID hear!” Chisame countered, angry at her moronic animals.

”Oh okay! WHO HERE HEARD!?”

There was silence.

Sayo floated at the corner of the cave over the passed out canary. She had heard everything easily, and she would’ve gladly explained it to everyone else…if she wasn’t a spirit that no one could see, besides those who were unconscious.

The fox sighed, “So NO ONE heard me!? Great, I wasted time. I’m not going to bother saying that all again, besides I have to get the injury-prone animals to a vet or something.” She glared at the injury-prone animals.

”What are you staring at!?” Yuuna argued, “Who could protect themselves from a vicious kappa!?”

Chisame said, “You do know kappas are the same size as otters and spend their life pranking humans? Some might eat humans, but most I know are obsessed with pickles. They don’t eat otters.”

”Then WHAT HAPPENED TO MY FAMILY HUH!? That and I was protecting Ako! How hard is it to escape a cheetah without getting hurt, to come unscathed from falling boulders, or to barely escape rushing lava and falling halfway down a cliff to some cave, with a chick harassing me without some scar!? OF COURSE I’D GET INJURED SOMEWHERE!”

”Then why isn’t Ku Fei injured?”

”…’cause Kuu’s stupid.”

”HEY! HOW DOES BEING STUPID MAKE ME IMMUNE TO STUFF-ARUNE!?”

Silence.

”…I’M NOT STUPID-ARU!”

Chisame quickly leapt out of the cave, “Regardless you’re still wounded, so let’s get the hell out of here before that bear realizes that this is her cave…”

It was a very intriguing story, and Sayo was surprised that animals like Chisame existed; nevertheless she was also worrying over the canary. The spirit was wondering why all the other farm animals didn’t give a damn over Kazumi’s serious condition like it was an everyday thing. Did they automatically know that she wouldn’t die?

An hour later, Sayo saw Chisame, as a human, walk out of the large building she called a ‘vet’. She was holding a crate, and in it was an otter, with a canary lying on top of it. They weren’t exactly active inside it, not that it was really big anyway.

”Ah! Oneechan and Yuuna-san is out now!” Ako shouted, alerting the crane and koala on the tree.

Setsuna quickly grabbed the koala with her talons as Ako jumped on top of the magnificent white bird. The crane flew and landed on the extended back of the carriage as Chisame hopped in, set the crate down and commanded the horses to go. There was writing on the side of the carriage:

Dark Evangel’s Stolen Carriages Business, rent a carriage now! Go to Dark Evangel Peak for more information!

After Satsuki the squirrel’s nikuman business, which was the first ever animal business, became a huge success, several animals started up their own as well.

”Are you two okay?” Konoka asked as she poked the crate.

”…I bit the man inside and he flung me against the wall,” Yuuna said, “And she laughed!”

Kazumi chuckled, “You never let go of him!”

”I had good reason!”

”What happened?”

”Well…”

That human came towards me with his death needle, and I backed away into my crate. I attempted to scare him away with my vicious yet powerful and awesome teeth, baring them I growled, but it did not faze the evil human.

Kazumi was laughing at me in the other cage, and I knew that once I had overcome this demon before me, that I had to do battle with the canary to avenge my dignity. I saw a glint of hope and leapt out of the open cage, running towards the doorway, but the mighty and frightening human was much too fast. His stomps to catch me were loud and demanding, just like his sinister mind! The sound was terrifying:

THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!

So I had to defend myself and jumped at the great giant before me, focusing all my power into my jaws, I brought my mouth onto the human’s paw…but alas, I had underestimated my opponent. He took the chance and jammed that dreaded death needle into my back, the pain was unbearable, yet I did not let go of his paw, keeping my jaws clamped to perhaps defeat my great enemy.

When he took out the death needle to most likely claim another victim, I decided to be heroic and damage the human beyond repair, but his power was too much for me…and he smashed me into the hard wall…it was my loss, though that didn’t mean I had lost the war.

He then approached the cage of my rival, Kazumi, and with a second death needle. I was on the ground licking at the wound that the evil human had inflicted to me. I saw as the pathetic canary jumped around to avoid what I had just suffered from. Lacking creativity like I, the tiny worthless bird fell out of her own crate instead of leaping magnificently like I, and fell flat on her face. Then she was attacked by the death needle.

Perhaps I had lost the battle to the human, but I did have my revenge on my laughing adversary.

”…that’s NOT what happened, Yuuna!” Kazumi yelled.

The otter smirked, “It was what BASICALLY happened! Right? We both suffered from the DEATH needle! This means WAR!”

”It’s not a death needle! We don’t die from it! It just hurts, and Chisame said it was a place for us to heal our injuries, so maybe it’s supposed to help!”

”NO! If you think you’re so right, then why don’t you tell your side of the story!?”

”Heehee, I like stories,” Konoka added. Ako, however, was frightened from Yuuna’s story though and hid behind the crane.

”Fine…”

We were just sitting in our cages when Yuuna was panicking from the needle that human was holding. Now I did get one before, and it MIGHT be evil, but Yuuna was acting as if we were running from a volcano! She was quickly dodging the attempts from the man to stick the thing into her, and then jumped out of the crate. She ran for the doorway but smacked into the door, and none of us know how to open them human doors, you know!

Stunned from running into something solid, the man decided to take this advantage, but Yuuna managed to bite the human before he could. Yet Yuuna didn’t really affect the man because he was wearing something onto his human paw, but the otter didn’t give up and just kept her dirty teeth on the human. So the human took advantage of Yuuna’s stupidity and stuck the needle into her. Since Yuuna was struggling so much it probably hurt more than it was supposed to!

She was probably really mad from that painful needle, and decided to just keep her mouth on the human for doing what he just did, so the man just flung her into a wall to get her off. Then he came to me with a needle, and even if I did try to get away I’d be too small since his giant human paw came down on me and kept me from moving. Since I couldn’t move, the needle didn’t really hurt that much. I laughed at Yuuna because of what happened, that’s all.

”You SUCK at telling stories! Where’s the drama of your story? The intense suspense!?” Yuuna argued.

Kazumi countered, “Yeah, but at least mine’s the truth, though if you think about it, if I added some drama to it, it’d be more interesting…wouldn’t it be cool to tell stories like that?”

Suddenly, the carriage jumped, as if it had hit a large bump, shortly afterwards it stopped.

”Eh? What’s going on?”

Two mysterious looking men holding guns, as if they were hunters, were blocking the trail back to Chisame’s farm, and the farmer herself was not in the best of mood to look for trouble.

”Why the hell are you blocking the road!? Get out of the way!” Chisame shouted, angry.

The older man smiled, “You know something about the legendary kitsune…and we want answers…”

Sayo overheard from inside the carriage, for she was the only one besides Chisame who knew what the two humans were talking about. She knew she had to tell Kazumi the truth about the farmer, so the canary could tell everyone else; after all, the bird seemed like an excellent chatterbox. It might be the only way to protect their caretaker from any poachers…

The Kappa district was always famous for their legendary creatures, and many always had come to attempt to find and hunt them.
