Chapter 29: The End Begins
A gentle breeze picked up and its gust started to become stronger, as the branches of trees danced with the wind, the waters of the river rapidly rushing down its own stream; the wind was not natural. Ku Fei looked at the snake, which was furious. The tiger walked slowly forward, then turning a little to the side, getting closer to a thick group of bushes. The snake eyed her carefully, watching and following step by step in a silent battle of glares.
Ku Fei bared her fangs, not taking an eye off from the beast in front of her. Setsuna slowly brought Konoka farther away, trying to take her out of danger, as the tiger carefully distracted the ferocious snake. The sound of nothing felt deadlier than the venom of the snake…
”Hello! I am lost!”
A voice rang out from the crowded heaps of silence, causing the young tiger to search for where it came from. This one small distraction was enough for the snake, which stuck, opening its mouth for its meal and kill. A lightning reaction came from the wildcat, turning its head back at the snake almost as fast as race horse on steroids. Ku Fei managed to grab the fangs and held them back from getting bitten, but she couldn’t hold on to them to prevent them from striking forever.
”Okay…so this isn’t exactly the best place to ask for directions, then…”
Ku Fei growled, her paws shaking as they struggled to keep the vicious teeth of the snake from coming down upon her, “This isn’t e-exactly the best t-time-aruyo!”
It was a devastating sight as the giant serpent whipped its body towards the cornered tiger, who growled back in unison as the snake slithered, showing its vicious fangs. The tail of its long slender body made a vile rattling sound that caused the other animals to shake in response. Its eyes were a crimson red, as if it had already seen the bloodshed it would cause before even striking. It seemed like there was no hope for the creatures staring at the ferocious snake, even Ku Fei was shaking a little.
The animal who was lost stepped backwards a bit, staying behind the irritated tiger. It looked like quite the long and deadly standoff.

”OH ME GODS!!!!” Misora yelled, “ER I MEAN, OH ME GOSHS! Oh for god’s sake that sounds corny…er I mean, OH FOR GOSH’S…oh (bleep!) that…”
Haruna tried to screech to a stop, but her waddling feet were not used for running, and thus, stopping. The penguin flipped over a few times, and then rolled into Misora, both of them crashing into a tree nearby. A sigh came from the animal who they had bumped into.
”I was hoping never to see you idiots again,” the rabbit said, face-palming.
Yue landed on the ground gently, wisely being polite to the all-powerful bunny-rabbit of doom, “We were looking for a human named Nagi Springfield.”
”What? That dolt? Why’d you need a moron like him?”
”You know this person?” Yue asked.
”Hm, I suppose you could say that. Long ago I was—“
”NU UH UH UH UH!” Haruna shouted, getting up from the tree, “NO UNNECESSARY FLASHBACKS EH! That prolongs the chapter!”
Evangeline smirked, “Too bad.”
Long ago I was but a young helpless rabbit searching for food in the battle of survival. Food was scarce, but I knew there were carrots across the road. Yet the road was a dangerous path to cross, as many animals were crushed trying to go over it, but I was desperate.
As I started onto the road, I had almost reached the other side, when these horses pulling a human carriage was racing insanely towards me, all hope was lost. I was to be dead there and then, until this man came out of nowhere. He used magic, which I knew some of then, but his were spectacular. It a flash I was saved from death and the horses never saw what was coming.
His name is Nagi Springfield, apparently a famous fisher…or in fact, a powerful mage. It’s a wonder how he’d come out of his busy life to save an insignificant rabbit like me, but from then on I took my magic seriously. Now I control wolves and have servants, heh. I wish I followed the man though, but he didn’t want me to continue to chase him…serves him right.
”Oooh, so this human saved your life! OF COURSE! Saving lives is a sign of LOVE! You LOVE HIM, right!?” Haruna yelled, causing the Dark Evangel to growl.
”Of course not, he abandoned me. Why would I…”
”Master,” Her seemingly emotionless ‘sidekick’ spoke up, “sorry to interrupt your rather intriguing conversation, but there seems to be a ruckus involving five unidentified animals near your peak.”
The rabbit turned around rapidly, “What!? No one’s allowed to go to my peak! It’s that damned snake isn’t it? I’ll give that stupid piece of (bleep!) some punishment from hell for going near my home again!”
”Master, the snake which you disciplined earlier this year seems to have grown rapidly in terms of power. Please do not underestimate it for your own safety.”
Evangeline put her paw near the face of the giraffe companion, “Chachamaru, you know I can handle myself. I will see if it really has grown in strength…but no one goes near my peak…”
”Oh! Can we go with you? That’s why we were finding that guy, because um, the snake or whatever attacked one of us and Chisame told us to…”
”Oh yes, that hypocritical fox. I don’t care what you do, but don’t expect me to protect you.”
Nodoka twiddled her flippers, “B-but I really wanted to s-see that child a-again…” Her quiet murmur went unnoticed, except for a certain owl.

Sayo sighed as she floated quickly through the forest, as two wildcats trailed her and Kazumi. The yellow canary had yet another yellow bird with her, on her back, running away from some angry and obviously hungry kitties. Kazumi really had messed up this time in trying to talk to those animals. Usually the bird of prey was good with words; maybe it was the excessive distractions overwhelming her.
”I hate the being who designed canaries. Why’d they make our legs so goddamned tiny!?” Kazumi yelled, puffing down the path away from roaring cats.
The bird continued to run, dodging the trees in the incredibly thick forest, not even caring whatever direction she was going. She jumped over a pebble and dodged a low branch, stepping on leaves that cried out with a painful crunch sound, and her legs splashed in the puddles of water. Finally the yellow animal reached a clearance, and dived into the side into a bush. Two wildcats ran pass, not knowing that Kazumi had been right beside them.
The oldest tricks in the book always seem to work…
Turning around, Kazumi noticed that the back of the bush was the area she was in before, when the snake came and attacked them, causing them all to separate because one of them had been critically injured. Chisame and Yuuna weren’t there anymore. The only thing left was the sanguine stain left on the dirt floor, where the otter had laid, where the gruesome sight had happened…
I wonder where Chisame took Yuuna, certainly hope she’s fine…
Kazumi then noticed that the mark left by the incident before wasn’t normal. The blood seemed to have a trail, leading to an abandoned den only fifteen metres away. The canary followed it, her curiosity piqued. Sayo suddenly had an abnormal chill go down her back, especially since ghosts aren’t supposed to have chills. Something was terribly wrong.
The three of them entered the den; Kazumi adjusted the younger bird on her back for more comfort as she stepped in. Cautiously she looked around, it was completely dark, and so she couldn’t see anything. Sayo pointed at a large leaf at the top of the den that seemed to cover a hole. The canary climbed up a vine covered in wax, which with its stickiness gave her an easier time climbing, to remove the leaf. A great amount of light finally set itself in. The den looked nicer looking.
As the yellow bird trekked in further, she noticed a dark boulder up ahead. The canary ran further, and the boulder was definitely no longer a rock. Her eyes finally stopped tricking her as she reached it. Therein lay a little otter, eyes closed, covered in a crimson liquid, and certainly the end of the dreadful trail.
”Yuuna!”
The canary dropped the chick, running towards the still body of fur lying there. She reached the chest of the otter, grabbing onto it and shaking the still thing in vain. A horrid feeling came over Kazumi.
”Yuuna! Yuuna! Wake up! Don’t die on me you idiot!” Yet she already knew it was too late when she touched the body, which was now cruelly stiff. The cold fur started to get soaked from the salty tears falling from the eyes of the desperate bird. She continued to shake and shake, but nothing but grim silence seemed to answer her back.
Sayo could do nothing for the canary who had all but broken down. The bird’s tears were surprisingly calm. She had wanted to comfort the bird, but nothing could be done because all that would happen would be her body-less spirit going right through her distressed friend. She couldn’t imagine what would happen if Ako had woken up. Even though it was pointless, the misty spirit slowly hovered downwards towards the canary and put her limb on the bird’s shoulder. A small part of it went into Kazumi but generally the ghost kept it at that area.
”Do you think something like this is worth crying over?”
While the yellow bird did hear the mysterious voice that suddenly echoed into the den, she did not lift her head to see who it was. The spirit on the other hand did, and recognized the being that had entered. Sayo couldn’t help but frown at its presence. The translucent spirit turned its gaze back at Kazumi, not wanting to stare at the face of the newcomer.
”I see…” It continued, noting the response-less reply.
It put its paw onto the lifeless body of the weasel-like creature, with an odd smirk, “Then allow me to help you.”
Kazumi raised her head; her eyes were surrounded by a mess of soggy feathers, so she rubbed them. Her vision cleared up a bit as she saw the same panda from before, chanting something illegible to them. Seconds later the panda placed her other paw onto the limp otter, not taking its eyes off the bird standing before them.
”Playing god…is something I’ve always wanted to do. And while I have achieved many things in my lifetime, it’s a goal that can never be achieved. I escaped from my home with the hope of changing it, and then the hope of leading a better life. I do not know if I have ever completed any of my quests, but one should at least leave the world with an impact.”
“What…what are you doing?” Kazumi could only mutter as she watched the panda focus her eyes onto the unmoving otter.
The panda closed her eyes, but her mind still had the image of the staring bird who still stood in front of her, “Doing the impossible, but at the same time…I’m not…Kazumi.”
”You aren’t doing what I…think you’re doing, are you?”
”It’s not much, I admit,” the panda continued, “but believe me, you will need it. Consider this a gift for sending you almost to your deaths with that dragon.”
”Wait, can’t you at least answer my questi—“
The panda bear laughed, a warm smile stretched from cheek to cheek, “If you’re patient, you’ll get the answers to everything you need, and more. One day peace will return to this area, I promise you.”
”No wait! I just want to know who you are!”
But there was no answer for the curious little canary, as a pale light soon grew brighter and brighter and brighter, until the whole thing just seemed to turn completely white, as if there was a silent explosion and everything eroded away smoothly and neatly. Nothing at all was left to Kazumi’s vision, since her surroundings had faded away. Only mere seconds passed.
”…whoa…”
-
Ku Fei looked up; she saw the sky in awe and fear, so much so that she could not move, as the gigantic serpent dived down towards her, and her legs would dare not to even make a twitch. The goat’s legs could move perfectly though, so the would-be farm animal dashed off away from the danger that was flying towards the petrified tiger. The feline gritted her fangs, waiting for everything to get over with. The fierce battled was devastatingly lopsided, and there was absolutely no time at all to even make a move.
She closed her eyes to force her senses to shut down ahead of time, but her ears thought otherwise. She heard a familiar hissing sound most likely from the snake, but there seemed to be no pain, or even anything wet dripping down her tense fur, which she expected there to be blood. As the tiger opened her eyes, the snake was very much still in front of her, but for some unknown reason, it had hesitated to attack.
Her instinct told her that moving could trigger the slithering reptile to quickly eat her whole, so she still continued to stay frozen, staring at the cold eyes of the killer. The killer who had attacked an animal, a close friend, and all this wildcat could do was stand still in fear. Ku Fei was supposed to be the mightiest and biggest carnivore out there, so it seemed a little ironic that her situation was to become prey.
The cat’s sensitive ears picked up another sound. Pass the heavy breathing and whimpers of fear from the other animals she heard a rough low snarl. It didn’t seem like something a cat, or even a snake would give off, but more like a canine, a dog. Ku Fei slowly looked over the humongous serpent, and saw an even bigger creature, one that looked very recognizable to her.
It then dawned on the tiger why the slender creature that was about to kill her stopped. For the very same reason Ku Fei stayed still, for the same reason the goat behind her ran away, it was because the snake itself was scared. How another magnitude of power could become so vulnerable in such a short time baffled the young feline. The newly arrived animal must’ve been even more dangerous than anybody could even imagine. As the striped mammal continued to stare at the canine only a few feet away, she suddenly realized why it was so familiar.
Is that Chisame-aru!? But she looks bigger…and as far as I can remember, only had one tail-aruka…in fact, she even looks angry, no…crazy!?
Ku Fei felt her chest start thumping so fast that it began to hurt; the anxiousness was as deadly as the tip of a double-edged sword…
