" By The Canadian Press
Australians taking the advice of their government's "Smart Traveller" web site will likely be steering clear of Canada.

That website, which is run by Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, has Canada listed as a country where travellers should "exercise caution," which is the second-safest category.

Apparently our problems stem from the threat of terrorism, heavy snow, ice and forest fires that can erupt "at any time."

British Columbia, in particular, was singled out as being in an active earthquake zone and "subject to avalanches" along with Alberta.

Countries listed on the Smart Traveller website that are considered safer than Canada include Chile, South Korea and Latvia.

Canada's Foreign Affairs website which offers advice to travellers has no official warnings against Australia, and says most Canadian visitors to that country don't have any problems."

Good gosh, Canada is dangerous! Of course there are forest fires everywhere! They can erupt at any time, even in winter when there's heavy snow all over the place! And yes, there's a likely chance that we'll get buried by avalanches even on the safe little bunny slopes of the mountains! I mean golly gee, I should be dead by now.

...what the hell is an ice forest fire?

Considering that pretty much everything in Australia is either poisonous, venomous or just plain deadly, I doubt that Canada could be more that much more dangerous. =P (Except if you went and prodded a grizzly bear...)

I bet more people die of crocodile attacks/shark attacks/box jelly fish stings/poisonous spider bites/snake bites/wild pig attacks (it happens)/being caught in a rip while swimming and getting swept out to sea in Australia than people die of terrorism, heavy snow, ice and forest fires that can ERUPT at ANY time!! in Canada.

For that matter, I bet there are more fires in Australia than Canada too. O_o

There are probably more fires in Australia. I mean Canada is dangerous in its own ways, but the things listed there are not them. We do have forest fires...in the summer...along with any other country not in the arctic that has a humid summer..

BC is not an active earthquake zone. Sure, we can get them, we had a small one like seven years ago, but otherwise we've had nil. The only danger is the scientists saying BC SHOULD be an active earthquake zone, if it isn't, that means it's just waiting for a really really big one...

And the only way people can get buried by avalanches is if you go to the mountains, and then leave the trail, and then enter a dangerous avalanche zone...about the same thing with ANY OTHER MOUNTAIN. Lots of people were dying from avalanches here because THAT IS WHAT THEY DID. So unless Australian tourists want to come to Canada to enter an avalanche-danger zone in the mountains...

Old people die in heavy snow. They slip on the ice and fall down or catch hypothermia...maybe it's suggesting that a great number of the Australian population is old. XP

I won't touch on terrorism...

In Australia we get really bad bush fires when it's dry that can destroy whole suburbs of cities. So I don't see why the Australian government should be warning people about Canadian fires. =P

Maybe the Australian government is dumb. xP Or maybe the person who was in charge of the website has a secret grudge against Canada...

Ok, I went to the website and read the stuff about Canada and it's not quite as bad as what that press release makes out. And it seems that they have "exercise caution" for all countries where terrorism is more likely (basically all the main western countries) because they say the same thing about the United Kingdom and America. I think they're just paranoid...
