Okay after TWO days I think my judgement has calmed down from both initial hype and initial despair. SO NOW FOR A FAIRER review of the game so far, with tons of love and tolerance. Gotta keep tolerating those bastards dissing UFO ...er I mean, to TEN DESIRES!

My favourite themes of Ten Desires:

Night Sakura of Dead Spirits, Stage 1 Theme, still the best one of the entire game. So basically after the beginning everything else disappointed me, lol. Or this theme was just that great. I dare say the best stage 1 theme in the entire series. (The UFO one was pretty good too though, as was MoF)

Old Yuanshen (or Old Distant Hermit or whatever the hell the name of this theme is), Stage 4 Boss Theme, which is one of my favourite themes of the just-released songs. It sort of reminds me of Tiger-Patterned Vaisravana in the beginning though (and even has curvy lasers zomfg!) ...but it's still a good theme! Also I love practically every stage four boss theme, so I get annoyed if people say otherwise. The only one I don't care as much for is Patchouli's theme. Phantom Ensemble, Love-Coloured Master Spark, Dream Battle, Youkai Mountain, Satori Maiden ~ 3rd Eye, Captain Murasa, and THIS SONG...are ALL AWESOME.

Futatsuiwa from Sado, Extra Boss Theme, while this is actually quite catchy I don't really think of it as fitting for the extra stage (nor the boss, either) but oh well. Quite catchy, etc.

I also like Rigid Paradise, but I'll keep it as an honourable mention for now.

The others I've listened to quite a bit except for the extra midboss theme (can't seem to find a proper high-quality listen of it) which somewhat saddens me as NUEEEE.

And now for the characters...again!

I played through stage four a few more times and Yoshika flailing her arms around not able to get up when she's temporarily down as the meatshield of Seiga is HILARIOUS. I think that's why I die in stage four all the time...I'm not paying attention, haha. The release has certainly raised my opinion of Yoshika. Seiga Kaku will still need more time, and apparently according to her profile she canonically isn't supposed to have that great of a personality anyway...huh.

Still have yet to form an opinion on Soga no Tojiko, the stage five midboss. I fear she'll fall in the ways of Medicine or something, her hair certainly reminds me of Medicine. Then again several other midbosses have risen from their lack of dialogue to decent popularity, the most successful being Momiji, but you'll never know.

I find Mononobe no Futo's spellcards really fun to play. I actually think she's easier than Seiga Kaku, which is odd since she's the stage five boss. Her themes unfortunately do nothing for me so far, but as you have noticed last post I do love her character design. I hope she develops into more than just "Miko's faithful second-in-command" or whatever. There have been plenty of servants and followers etc. in this entire game, often the stage five boss, and every one of the previous ones have been given decent characterization. I recall when I first saw Shou Toramaru I feared despite her epic character design she'd have a boring personality. Then fanon gave me a pleasant surprise, and now she's one of my favourites! Anyway when I went through Futo's dialogue it was unfortunately rather repetitive with all four characters unlike the others, so that disappointed me as well. Despite that I have great confidence Futo will end up as a well-established character. Because Futo looks awesome.

As for Toyosatomini no Miko...
Well first I think her name might be a bit of a problem. Seeing as the game already has a few mikos and her name actually IS Miko...maybe not so for the Japanese but it will be odd here on the English side. Second she certainly seems rather like a pompous jerkass at the moment. So much so that the heroines (or at the very least, Reimu) seems to agree with her when she mentions TEH EVIL MYOUREN TEMPLE OF DOOM because youkai ARE HORRIBLE NASTY BEINGS led by their traitorous leader, the DARK LORD BYAKUREN and their silly FOOLISH RELIGION OF BUDDHISM--oh sorry.

I could go into an entire rant of how much I love Byakuren's character, but I can chalk up Toyosatomimi's (okay last time I'm typing out that entire last name >_>) initial opinion of her because she's been asleep for FOURTEEN-HUNDRED-YEARS and doesn't realize what Gensokyo is about by now. Or so I think. Nue's profile sort of hints that Byakuren deliberately kept her sealed, but I don't know for sure. That doesn't sound very Byakuren-ish. I think Nue just jumped the gun or something.

Speaking of Nue...she is the extra stage midboss! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
And her dialogue is sadly limited and the same in every scenario, so I can't really discuss much of her unless I discuss her new...er old, tanuki friend from THE OUTSIDE OMFG who in my opinion has the most DERANGED name ever.

Mamizou Futatsuiwa, the tanuki with glasses and a very strange looking outfit. You know I think I'd like her more if she didn't look completely off on her portrait. And the fact that people are portraying her as a tall, onee-chan type (with a healthy chest, apparently) she now reminds me of a raccoon VELMA.

Yes, from SCOOBY DOO.

So not only Negi from Negima, Mami from Madoka, now VELMA FROM SCOOBY DOO.

CANNOT UNSEE FOREVER. Hooray, more bias against TD...sigh. The dialogue seems to make her out as some old lady or something, like she speaks like one...so I wonder if she'll end up joining the OLD MAID ALLIANCE. In fact all the new characters from TD appear to be EVEN OLDER than the Myourenji cast. I mean there are youkai who are far too old here and there, but an entire cast being old was unique to Myourenji until now... (And hooray, the cast of Subterranean Animism can still be maintained as the youngest! At least in my eyes) So my complaints are like "WHY IS THERE SO MUCH OLD IN MY TOUHOU!? SO MUCH OLD."

But her danmaku are apparently super awesome. I wouldn't know because I am stuck on Stage Six. DAMN YOU MIKO LET ME KILL YOOOOU. /sucks at this game

As for the gameplay itself...I'm not sure whether I hate the UFOs in UFO more or the spirit...things here. In UFO you don't HAVE to grab them, but sometimes you accidentally fly into them when dodging and thus get the wrong colour which aggravates me to no end. However here all the spirit things are up top or near the boss so you run into tons of fairies or the boss itself. (I ran into Yuyuko headfirst once, olololol) The backgrounds are AMAZINGLY pretty though. I especially love stage five, that...big building moving around in the background.

My biggest complaint of all is the colour palette of these characters. NEEDS MORE NEON GREEN HAIR. NEEDS MORE RED AND NAVY BLUE AND I AM JUST DESCRIBING KEINE'S DRESS BUT IT IS SO PRETTY... NEEDS LESS SAME HAIRSTYLES, ONLY FUTO LOOKS UNIQUE...MIKO JUST HAS THE SAME HAIR WITH RANDOM HAIR DEFYING GRAVITY. WHERE IS THE SUPER PRETTY LONG HAIR DAMN IT. NEEDS MORE ELABORATE HATS. NEEDS MORE CONTRAST, BLACK AND WHITE AND SHIKIEIKI!

Yeah that's my biggest complaint. This game lacks Shikieiki.
