a sort of sorts
Oct. 29th, 2014 12:33 amGREETINGS FRIEND BLOG
You know how I, Spotto, routinely post on such things like SORTS, wherein I rank characters from some sort of show or book or what have you and then discuss results on here!? Well, guess what this post is about!
You know how I also routinely post popularity polls on such things from well, popularity polls, and I also discuss results on here? Well, guess if that is also included in this post!
And what fandom is Spotto enamoured with at the moment anyway? Well what else could it be but the very lovely web-series, RWBY. This show is treading on Negima territory in terms of love-hate, but I guess the bright side here is that I actually like the main characters and I'm not clinging to minor characters spewing hatred and anger everywhere at why life is unfair. For today's post, I will not be ranty except maybe about why certain characters aren't as popular as they should be or why I like a specific character moreso now than beforehand or visa-versa, so without further ado here are my results...underneath the cut with the rest of the discussion.

If the names are too small just click to see it in its full-size glory.
When I showed these results to a friend of mine, he told me that my results were boring. I DISAGREE, unfortunately when one looks at the main rankings averaging out everyone's results, WEISS (at the time I looked yesterday) was at a DISAPPOINTING SIXTH. Yes, she is less popular than her fellow main characters, and people who don't deserve to be higher than the other three are Pyrrha and Neo. Now I very much love Neo, but she's a newcomer you see. She does not have a song dedicated to her, or a trailer, nor do we know of a backstory so far. At the moment Neo is simply a cocky mute petite potential psychopath, which are all fine and dandy things but isn't enough to usurp others who have been here longer, have had more development, and much more juicy fanworks. This can all change of course. Pyrrha...well, I dunno, so I'm not gonna contemplate. All I have to say is that she has a terrible taste in men.
Weiss is a wonderful character. There are people too blind to see this, BUT IN TIME, I am confident her elegance and tiny balls of anger will charm them over. Meanwhile, let's discuss my other preferences. On the bottom of the list is Neptune, mostly because he is involved in the arc-that-shall-not-be-named and actively participated in the butchering of Weiss' character. That is an unforgivable offence, and so he festers at the bottom of the list. Jaune too, had a major part in that sad arc backdropped with a song that I can't get rid of in my head. (Damn you, Jeff Williams!) But he was okay last season and thus has a slight amount of merit compared to the K-pop singing noodle. Mercury has so far been extremely generic. He is a bad dude. At least Emerald seems to have a one-sided thing for Cinder (she feels like a loyal kicked puppy hahaha) and rolls her eyes and such. Her design gives her this air of humanity while Mercury's looks like an irredeemable jackass, so if a redemption arc were to exist, I think Emerald would make the most sense to board that train. No one likes Cardin and I don't care to discuss any of the rest of this list except the top four. I will give a small mention to Sun who is sixth if only because I am a pretty big Michael Jones fan, the Achievement Hunter. Who I believe has excellent acting AND voice-acting skills and does well as Sun even if his character isn't especially important.
A few months ago Yang would be second, but you see. She was only second not because YANG was better than everyone not-named Weiss, but because no one was better than Yang. By that I mean, if I HAD to have a second favourite, I'd choose Yang, but I do not like her all that much better over Ruby. However as that image shows, things have changed. If I HAD a least favourite of team RWBY, it'd have been Blake, but now my thoughts and processes are different, and Blake has taken a solid second. Not just because I only care about one character above-all, but in fact, I like her second-best. Her position makes sense! You see back in season one I simply wasn't a fan of Blake. She was that quiet, dramatic, dark character who would no doubt be a fan-favourite. Then season two happened and Blake enveloped her grumpy-cat tendencies, wore a pretty nice outfit that wasn't her usual atrocious clothing though at this point I've gotten used to it, and well, I began writing her myself. It was a little tough at first, and I really expected to have a hard time writing Blake because I didn't care about her, but I'm really enjoying writing her. I'm usually not all that fond of self-righteous characters especially, but something about Blake worked for me this time around. Who knows why? I guess that's why I ship Checkmating so much now.
Of course if Blake was the only change, why would Yang be fourth? I hinted at it a few times in previous rants, wondering about Yang's inconsistency in terms of writing. Her trailer, fanworks, and words from the writer's/creator's mouths themselves always painted Yang as this boisterous bombastic party girl. She was fun incarnate! But when season two went on, Yang felt a lot more serious and uptight than I originally expected. It's like Weiss stole all of her energy or something. WEISS! Why is Weiss the one making puns and Yang the one putting it down? I was so confused at the end of episode four, but in hindsight from her need to battle Neo, she must've been too pissed in letting her get away that episode to have been in the mood for jokes. But if that was the case, does it not make her somewhat of a hypocrite, is she the only one allowed to make puns and the only one who can control when jokes can be on the field if not? Was Weiss' pun so horrible it shoved a stick up Yang's ass? THE MYSTERIES! Meanwhile, Weiss is standing on a CHAIR pointing dramatically at Blake to cheer her up and get her to open up, but Yang instead gives her a very serious backstory-exposition super serial guys heartfelt talk to fix Blake. WHAT IS THIS SWITCHEROO MADNESS!? Did they actually put the traits I loved in Yang IN the character who was ALREADY MY FAVOURITE? And of course I mentioned before how Yang said she would turn heads at the dance, and does nothing at all out of the ordinary that stands out or would illustrate her supposed party-girl status. The fuck.
Finally, in episode eleven she loses against Neo and mystery lady appears to save her. I guess my final beef with Yang is her mother issues, how she's missing and all. Nothing wrong with having mother issues in itself, but I seriously thought that would've been Ruby's thing. I don't know what these writers are planning and I'm sure Yang's issues and Ruby's issues, while obviously related (geddit? hurr.) will still be distinct enough later on. I just don't want to hear Yang's songs being about being kickass and awesome (and then suddenly being mundane and conservative at that party) and about protecting Ruby to suddenly stealing Red Like Roses pt. II for her backstory. It just seems a little odd y'know? But we'll see. The main character will have her time in the spotlight soon enough!
Speaking of Ruby since we haven't learned anything significant about her she pretty much stays the same. The same good ol' Ruby, so she stays where she is and it's only Blake and Yang switching places. Months back I was quite into Freezerburn too, if anyone here follows my Tumblr regularly and noticed all the tall blonde-on-midget-white-girl action, but now it's all about Blake/Weiss, so...that change changed things too.
Now we'll show my friend's results for funsies and how I discuss how wrong they are because

NONE OF THEM HAVE WEISS AS #1.
There's one more result that a friend of mine didn't post a pic of because she was tired, but she had Ruby first for comparison...which still isn't Weiss.
One day. One day.
At the very least, we all agree Jaune isn't great. In particular how those results came from my guy friends who I guess are meant to relate to or identify with a character like Jaune....but they don't. I guess I don't make friends with people who are like Jaune. Do people like Jaune have friends? Do girls like Pyrrha exist? We just don't know. For whatever reason I feel like my tone throughout this post has been very patronizing. Ah well, it might possibly be because I actually wrote this all already on my laptop but chose not to copy and paste it onto Dreamwidth because my image links were on the desktop, SO I JUST TYPED IT ALL AGAIN. That first rant was a bit of a rush job anyway. Why do I feel the most inspired to write at the worst of times? In the morning during breakfast before leaving for important meetings or errands! In the middle of the night just before bed, when I manage to type out a few promising paragraphs and then drop dead in bed. Nope, the part of the day where I have TIME and ENERGY the motivation just isn't there, is it now?
Blah, ah well. This has been Spotto. Oh wait I'm reading over that first draft and I mentioned something about Pyrrha. You see, Pyrrha has a considerable amount of screentime in the opening, so I expected PYRRHA screentime during this season. Aside from Cinder specifically targeting her that hasn't gone anywhere yet, all Pyrrha has is her crush on Jaune that ended up being requited at the end of the arc. None of this tells us a thing about Pyrrha's backstory or development of her character, it was purely romance-based. Was that horrible arc-that-shall-not-be-named really the PYRRHA arc we get!? Really!? That was a second JAUNE story arc! If I was a Pyrrha fan, even though most of her fans do approve of Arkos, I'd be seriously peeved! Really! Otherwise maybe the tournament/rest of Cinder arc being delayed to next season due to the writer's having no sense of pacing might be the explanation, but that doesn't really excuse anything. How disappointing.
Ah well, maybe one day RWBY won't be a rollercoaster ride, pissing me off for a few weeks then hyping me up and going crazy about it a few weeks later. I prefer my fandoms to have a sense of stability, not ridiculous highs with ridiculous lows. That's...a bit much, if anything. This has been Spotto, and if the top of your list isn't Weiss, you're lying to yourself. Shall I visit you all door-to-door to teach you about our lord and saviour?
