Yadda yadda DRV3 spoilers, you get the drill.

HELLO BLOG!!

HELLO!

I AM HERE TODAY, ON THIS RAREST OF DAYS OF WHICH I AM HERE

TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE GREATEST VIDEO GAME CHARACTER IN EXISTENCE

I FEEL LIKE SHOEHORNING THIS CHARACTER AS MERELY ONE FROM A "VIDEO GAME" IS A MASSIVE DISSERVICE TO THEM

RATHER, I MOSTLY REFER TO HER AS MY WIFE

YES, THE WEEABOO TRADITION OF DECLARING A FICTIONAL CHARACTER YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER

BELIEVE IT OR NOT HOWEVER, I HAVE NEVER CALLED ANY PREVIOUS FAVOURITE CHARACTERS OF MINE MY WIFE OR WAIFU

THE CLOSEST WAS WEISS, WHO I DECLARED WAS MY HUSBANDO EVERY TIME I SAW BEAUTIFUL FANART OF HER IN NORMALLY TRADITIONAL MASCULINE CLOTHING, LIKE SUSPENDERS OR MEDIEVAL KNIGHT ARMOUR OR WHAT HAVE YOU

BUT THAT WAS ONLY A MERE FANTASY OF WEISS, IN CLOTHING SHE HAS NEVER CANONICALLY WORN AND THUS I, THROUGH THE IMAGINARY AND ARBITRARY RULES OF CHOOSING A WAIFU, CANNOT OFFICIALLY DECLARE HER AS MY HUSBANDO

I SAW A PRETTY GIRL COSPLAY AS HER, AND WANTED TO MARRY THEM. I VIEWED THEIR OTHER COSPLAYS, AND THOUGH THEY REMAINED PRETTY AND THEIR TALENT IN COSPLAY CRAFT UNRIVALED, I DID NOT FEEL THE SAME WAY

AND ALTHOUGH SHE MAY BE A VIOLENT, GULLIBLE, FASHION DISASTER OF A MISANDRIST, I CANNOT HELP BUT LOVE HER

Ye. You know who I'm talking about.

Tenko Chabashira.

Oftentimes, unless it's love at first sight like with Weiss, I don't get drawn to a character immediately. In fact the first character I start liking never becomes my ultimate favourite of the series. And I'm not here to sing the praises of Tenko. I think I've done that quite a bit already in this blog. Rather I'm moreso here to explain why of all characters I refer to her as my wife. It's less about "I WISH THIS ANIMU-LIKE CHARACTER WAS REAL SO I CAN MARRY HER!" which I suppose would be nice, but rather if I were to find someone and to marry them, Tenko has almost all the qualities. A DEFENDER of girls, an honest, open-heart she isn't afraid to show and simply being herself is motivation for a character to improve themselves, especially if Tenko LIKES that character. I mean, there are a lot of characters like Tenko, like Kaede from the same game for instance, or Kaito, all of who coincidentally die so the person they motivate can become better people and develop. I feel like unlike Tenko tho, Kaede not only having less time to leave an impression (even which by playing as her made her give QUITE the impression) she also plays the trope a bit too straight for me to cling onto her like I did Tenko. I think it's more like, she's just this generically nice person, who believes in everyone and wants them to work together and be friends! I didn't truly love Kaede until it was revealed she had planned a premeditated murder to yes, ultimately save them all from a certain doom, but still was the first to resort to killing to solve her problems. It blew open Kaede's character for me. I mean after the shock and denial of Kaede being the culprit and thus not the protagonist of the rest of the series, and the gut-punch that came with the twist.

Basically, it gave her this cripplingly, fatal flaw, where she resorted to murder, killed the wrong person and was put to death because of it. That gave Kaede dimension. I saw her flaws, but by the time that happened she was dead, and could leave no more influence on me as the player. I tried to abide by her words as Shuichi did of course, but that aspect of her character was the less interesting part of her. There was never really anymore insight on Kaede the killer, just Kaede the martyr. And in a lot of fanworks I don't see a lot of people bringing up this part of her character enough, instead focusing on her nice girl motivational side. It's such a shame.

Kaito on the other hand also has flaws that are quite human. He is stubborn to a fault and sticks to his beliefs in the end. He gives Shuichi the silent treatment when Shuichi chooses logic over belief, even as heartbreaking and as difficult it was to accept Gonta being the culprit. My issue with him is that he ends up being the sole person Maki really clings to, and Maki's whole character revolves around him. His shounen protagonist personality isn't especially original nor one I'm particularly drawn to as well. Also unlike Kaede to Shuichi, Kaito doesn't seem to reciprocate Maki's feelings, choosing instead to emphasize her growth as a person over her confession even at death's door. You think since this is the last bit of your life if you too felt the same way this would be the time to say it, no matter if your mouth is filled with blood or what-have-you, but Kaito never returns Maki's words. He dies with his stubbornness streak still alive and encouraging words to keep his friends going. I almost want to say I could easily headcanon Kaito as ace.

Now I guess I'm digressing, but the obvious ace character is Rantaro. I sort of feel they pushed that angle of Rantaro without much subtlety. Tsumugi accusing Rantaro of being gay was at the time a really strange remark from her. She was upset at him for intruding in her nail event with Kaede, so spewing such words with such anger maybe implied that being gay was an insult. This coming from the girl we find out from her love hotels has an incest kink, and having written the script for V3 probably threw that into Kork's character for kicks as well. I'm not sure I like the implications of that, but due to Danganronpa;s openness to having LGBT characters it's easily overlooked. If the context was of a show that was strictly hetero instead then that comment might be a bit distressing.

Still, there is one thing the death of Kaede has affected pretty heavily on V3 that has bothered me the most. When I first learned of V3 and the aspect of there being the FIRST FEMALE PROTAGONIST of a MAINLINE game I was hyped! So many people kept bringing up both before Kaede ended up being a false protagonist and after she died that the gender of the protagonist has no bearing, and all these people upset that she died had no merit. That's fucking bullshit. Of course there's merit. There's merit in the one thing NO ONE is thinking of, or thinking ahead of .
That despite Danganronpa being a franchise of games, anime, and OVAS of murder and mystery, the dating Sim aspect of it is ALWAYS THERE. You will always get the character of choice's underwear, regardless of their gender, regardless of yours. In some freetime events it starts implying romance between you and the target character, REGARDLESS of their sex. That means people have oodles of evidence to claim so-and-so isn't straight, is bi, is gay, and so on. V3 drives this point harder and even includes love hotel events with suggestive scenes and even going all the way being implied. DR3 had the sexuality of a character be a MAJOR plot point near the end of both animes. It's not something they are too shy to skirt around!

But due to our protagonist continuously being a boy... we can never have lesbians. Not concretely. Because whatever event they have, FTEs, special events, love hotels and so on, no matter what they say or do in canon.. .there will always be a point in the game where you can interact with them, as your male character, and they will become infatuated with you. In short, I feel like Danganronpa targets to either a straight male audience or a yaoi fangirl audience. That does seem to be a massive population of the fandom anyway. There could be lucky happy gay males as well, but the point is it's you like a guy, or you play as a guy who likes a girl. Or a guy. BUT WHAT ABOUT GIRLS WITH GIRLS!?!?

Well V3 finally came around and gave us Tenko, the least subtle lesbian yet.

OH WAIT. THERE'S THE LOVE HOTEL. AND KAEDE DIED. SO WE HAVE TO BE SHUICHI.

You know what? They still could have kept her a lesbian. Gonta's love hotel has him try to pretend Shuichi is a lady so he could be the proper gentleman, so Shuichi remaining as his gender wasn't necessary. It's fantasy anyway. Nope, Tenko will hook up with a boy if they meet her super specific high standard criteria. SO IT'S POSSIBLE!

And so, millions of people declare she cannot be lesbian. This is proof. I guess I can't REFUTE said proof, but it disheartens me. I guess I could say, due to sexuality being a spectrum, she is bi but with an extreme preference for girls. Still, it bothers me. It bothers me that they can have the sexuality of a man influence the most important backstory of ALL OF DANGANRONPA'S HOPE'S PEAK SAGA, but we can't have somewhat unimportant character who doesn't affect the plot whatsoever be a lesbian. We can't. SHE MUST like a boy. I was so excited to be Kaede so I can have all the yuri in the world, but no. It's the bi protagonist and the gay or bi guys again. The thing is when Kaede was alive and being the protag we had a taste of yuri. Even though they weren't FTEs or love hotels, she was remarking on how sexy Tsumugi was or how cute Tenko was. WHY. WHY TEASE US OF SUCH AND THEN TAKETH IT AWAY!? So all I had left in the end was Tenko. Super obvious, unsubtle Tenko who started off like a Kazuichi stalkng her prey. Well that's a great starting point. And even when Tenko DID get through to Himiko, most canon hints lead to Himiko being straight, or only appreciating Tenko for her friendship. If she were to reciprocate it'd have to be never or a long process, but Tenko dies too fast for anything to happen anyway.

My wife deserved better. ;_;

And I love Himiko too. I relate to her on a spiritual, no, MAGICAL level. I'm not delusional though. Sure we could take the implications throughout the game that maybe, MAYBE Himiko could have liked Tenko, but we could apply the same logic through the lens of friendship. There is no concrete evidence either way, but her imagining her ideal god as a handsome man and lack of any hints to Himiko being interested in girls doesn't give us much to go on. We can only have our heads, our imaginations that maybe she likes girls too, maybe in an alternate universe where 90% of the cast doesn't die she ends up being heavily closeted and discovers her true preferences, but we can only always pretend. I know I could always waltz to some show or game that's either a cast full or girls or even has yuri as a genre instead to find this kind of thing, but wouldn't it be nice in a game or show where the gender ratio is pretty equal, that there just so happens to be a lesbian, or a yuri couple? And their entire personality and character isn't that they're just gay? And they aren't some random one-off side character like the main character's best friend who shows up in four episodes out of forty just so the creator can say their show is inclusive? JUST SOMETHING TO MAKE THAT KIND OF CHARACTER NORMAL. BECAUSE THEY ARE NORMAL, AND ARE AROUND, AND CAN BE INFLUENTIAL ON THE PLOT, AND THEIR PREFERENCES FOR GIRLS ISN'T ENTIRELY WHO THEY ARE!? AND MAYBE THEY DON'T DIE?

Am I asking for too much?

Well at least there's Tracer I guess.

But Tenko, Tenko is my ideal. She says Himiko is her ideal. Tenko is mine. I was always irked when people would drive the point home that Tenmiko was one-sided, that Himiko only liked guys. They did have the evidence to back that up. I felt better when I realized almost all the couples in Danganronpa were one-sided. I was overjoyed when there were mountains of hints of Ishimaru and Mondo having potential to be together... after they were both canonically killed off, but still! It gave me hope that they might say the same about Himiko for Tenko someday. I just wish they showed it  a little more, instead of an afterthought. Instead of "oh the plot is done and all or half of the OTP is dead, but HEY they could have really liked each other!" It reminds me of those artbook notes that were translated recently. The creator mentioned Tenko's abs. That she has them.

WHAT ABS!?

I guess that explains her constant midriff, but THERE ARE NO ABS DEFINED ON THAT BELLY. It makes sense that she might have them, but to the HUMAN EYE, they do not exist. They have not been drawn onto that belly. It is a flat belly sure, but it is a BLANK belly. With the exception of her navel, there is NOTHING there to show for and I cannot believe that the creator canonically SAYS yes, there are abs, when there are NONE TO BE SEEN! I AM VERY CONFUSED.

And yes they are capable of drawing abs, have you SEEN Sakura!? So I am rather perturbed! Yes, I am glad she does have abs that we can't see. Great. Thanks for literally telling but not showing.

I dunno. I guess what I really like about Tenko is that she really does love Himiko. Sure initially she loves her at first sight, and one would assume it's some sort of superficial shallow crush, but then Tenko defends Himiko no matter what, whether it is from danger or being accused. She trusts her unconditionally! She encourages her, motivates her, and praises her, but knows Himiko is not perfect. She tries to push Himiko to being better, to overcome her vices and become the best mage she can be. She's just so universally supportive and unrelenting, and so OPEN! Sure she's overly gullible and believes certain things from those who study the same craft to the extreme, but Tenko, once set on something, goes all the way. There's no half-assing with her. And she's impulsive, violent, clingy, and could be quite annoying and loud, but someone so genuine and earnest like Tenko... I just can't hate, no matter what, no matter what flaws she might have. Despite all of those, despite her remarks that all men should die, and such that normally would be reprehensible, underneath it is a person with a good, strong heart. She's misguided sometimes yes, but dang. It does take quite a bit to make someone who openly welcomes the death of half the population to be so good. It could also be bad writing because that flaw of hers doesn't seem to seep into the more serious scenes as much, like they regarded it as purely a comedic side of Tenko and so, it could not come up at the more somber moments where it'd be inappropriate and destroy the mood...maybe Tenko's really good at reading the atmosphere? I wouldn't be surprised. Isn't it random when after Kaede dies, and if you talk to Tenko at some random place in the school shortly after he takes off his hat, she remarks that people being bothered or questioning his choice to remove his hat disrespectful? That it is something between him and Kaede? That's really mature of her to say such a thing, especially when her FTEs with Kaede start off with Tenko asking Kaede if she was okay because Shuichi, being a boy, MUST have done something to her. It's almost like Tenko is just great at reading the atmosphere and doesn't truly hate men, just puts lots of effort into doing so, so her neo-aikido can stay at top-form.

Have I reiterated how much of a dog Tenko is yet? Like, over and over again? How she is loyal, fiercely protective and supportive of whoever she likes best, believes anything her master says, and literally growls and drools in the game? You can't tell me she isn't a dog. Maybe I don't want a wife. Maybe I just want a dog.

I still want a girl like Tenko though. AND a dog.

it's the dream.
