Chapter 2: Mouse Trap

Inside the house of the farm, Chisame sat on the computer chair, continuously typing on her expensive keyboard, one of the gifts from one of her fans, while drinking a cup of milk. She suddenly realized that she hadn’t had breakfast yet, and decided to stop what she was doing and head into the barn. There was one egg left and she was certainly not going to waste it. She then remembered the yellow canary that was given to her earlier, and wondered what canaries tasted like. Moving that thought aside, she put a large extravagant outfit that was sitting on the table onto her bed.

The teenager creaked open her door and took a peek inside, the barn was unusually quiet. All her animals would often be incredibly loud and annoying at this time of day. She walked towards the late hen’s nest and noticed no egg there, rather shells instead.

Don’t tell me my breakfast hatched…

Chisame observed her surroundings, wondering where a chick would go. She then realized she had put the canary beside the egg a few hours ago, which also seemed to be absent from the barn. Growling, she kicked a stable’s door beside her and in an instant, a ‘meow’ sounded out from behind it. Swinging the door open, Chisame grabbed her cat swiftly and threw it out the barn.

”Go find the damn birds!” cried out Chisame, ordering her cat around. The striped feline ran off.

----

Down by the lake, Konoka, Setsuna, Kazumi, and Ako were strolling beside the calm water’s edge. Ako was only a few hours alive, and assumed that the koala and crane were both her parents, despite them both being female. Later on she started calling Kazumi her ‘oneechan’ (informal way of saying older sister), because she was also a yellow vertically and horizontally challenged beaked creature. Every one of the animals excluding Konoka didn’t know why they were at the lake.

“And this is the rock that we always jump on to get to the other side!” Konoka pointed, acting as their tour guide, “this here is the infamous weed that gave Setsuna a paper cut, hee hee.”

Setsuna mumbled something under her breath, and Kazumi obviously heard her. They nudged each other continuously when they suddenly stopped walking.

“And this is where Haruna-chan lives! Haruuuuna!!” Konoka cried out. A sudden splash of water crashed into the strolling creatures, something Kazumi particularly didn’t like.

A blue and white plump animal popped its head out of the water. It had two funny antennas on its head, but it obviously was not an invertebrate. The penguin jumped onto the grass beside the other four and started shaking ‘hands’ enthusiastically.

“Hello! Hello! Who are these cute little birdies!? I’m Haruna, also called Paru, but you can’t call me Paru yet, you have to follow the seven steps of friendship which takes a while to finish until you have the privilege to call me Paru!”

Ako tugged on Konoka’s paw, “Papa, she’s scary.”

Konoka laughed for about the thousandth time that day and patted Ako’s head, “It’s only Haruna-chan! She’s a gooood penguin!”

”So Paru, why are you swimming in the water? You look like a bird!” Kazumi pointed out. She obviously didn’t care about ‘the seven steps of friendship’.

Haruna dunked Kazumi head first into the lake, almost as if her intent was to drown the smaller bird for breaking the rule she had set in just before, “I am a bird! I am a water bird, and also, don’t call me Paru! Only close friends, family, and handsome birds can! Lots of birds like water, don’t you!?”

Under the water, Kazumi was struggling to break free of Haruna’s surprisingly tight grasp, when she suddenly spotted a squid swimming around. It was an odd squid, as it had these weird marks on its face. Just before Kazumi could look at it more, she freed herself out of the dreaded water and coughed.

“It’s kind of rude to try to drown Kazumi before letting her introduce herself, Haruna-chan!” Konoka said.

Kazumi crossed her wings, and then suddenly pointed into the air, “I can’t swim, but can you fly?”

There was a moment of silence, and Haruna stood there, staring at the canary. Her eyes seemed to look a little different as she stared more and more at the tiny bird.

”I can’t fly,” she finally admitted.

”Ha! I thought so!” The canary opened her beak to say something else, but Haruna suddenly brought out another point.

”…but can YOU fly!?”

Again, a similar silence took the moment; the scene looked reversed, as Kazumi’s eyes were staring off.

”Living in a cage all your life doesn’t give you much to try to fly,” she countered.

There was a sudden gasp from every animal standing around, besides Ako, who looked confused.

”What’s a cage?,” the innocent chick muttered out. Konoka opened her mouth to say something when a cry from afar stopped her.

”IT’S KU FEI!!! RUN!!!” A young hamster came running down the hill towards the other animals. Behind her was a yellow striped cat, strikingly similar to a young tiger cub, chasing the hamster and gaining.

”A PUDDY TAT!” Kazumi yelled out and pointed strangely before she was tugged by the neck from some animal behind her and dragged along with the others, running for their lives.

The hamster suddenly tripped and tumbled down, crashing into Kazumi and the mysterious animal. They found themselves sparred all over the ground and the cat made a mighty leap into the air towards them.

Kazumi opened her eyes and rubbed her wing, looking up. The mysterious animal was nowhere to be seen, but there was a hamster toppled above her. She turned her head to see a huge cat’s head about 10 centimetres away from her.

The mouth of the cat was huge as it opened, and to Kazumi’s dismay, she saw large sharp fangs about to close in on her and the hamster.

”Oneechan!” Ako cried out. Konoka gasped and Setsuna flew into the air about to do something before it was too late, yet there was so little time.

THONK!

The cat suddenly fell backwards from some indistinguishable force, and splashed into the water. It came out of the water with a rather upset ‘meow’ and slowly crawled off. The canary and hamster sighed in relief. The crane, surprised by what had happened, had to stop abruptly from crashing into the two small animals on the ground and screeched into a tree close by.

“Secchan!” Konoka shouted as she rolled down the hill towards the tree where Setsuna had smacked into.

”Are you alright, Secchan!?”

Setsuna rubbed her temples for a while, then looked at where the cat used to be, “I’m f-fine, Ojou-sama, what a-about you?”

”Secchan! I wasn’t even close to the mean kitty! And you knew that, hee hee! Sometimes I wonder if you’re ever paying attention!”

Ako meanwhile, ran to her ‘oneesan’s’ side, and pushed the hamster off her, “Is oneechan okay!?”

Kazumi dusted herself off and stood up, staring at the open space where the cat mysteriously was stopped by an invisible power. She was so intrigued at what might’ve saved her, that she wasn’t paying attention to her surroundings.

”Oneechan? Did you hit your head? You’re not saying anything!”

Finally noticing the younger bird beside her, she rubbed her head and nodded, “I’m fine, Ako!” Yet she was still curious as to what saved her from being kitty food, suddenly a little rodent beside her started crying.

“Waaahhh! I’m s-sorry!” The hamster sobbed, rubbing her little eyes and gaping open her mouth periodically. The two little birds looked at the hamster filled with tears confusingly.

“I’m sorry I a-almost got you eaten with m-me!”

Konoka ran towards the three small animals sitting at the bottom of the hill, and she was dragging Setsuna along.

“Natsumi-chan!” Konoka hollered as she reached the hamster. She screeched to the stop when she got to them and the dust that dirt that resulted from the screech covered up the two birdies and the hamster.

The koala wiped the tears off the little hamster’s eyes, “Aw, don’t cry! It’s not your fault! It’s that Ku Fei’s fault! She’s always trying to eat you!”

”Now that I think about it…” Setsuna started, “didn’t Ku Fei say something before?”

”Hm?” Kazumi spoke up, suddenly becoming interested.

Haruna, who finally ran to them since she was a bit slow, was holding a pointed stick. She stuck the stick into the ground and started moving the branch around, creating a crude picture of the cat.

”I remember!” Haruna said, “Once, Ku Fei actually caught Natsumi, and we were trying to persuade her not to eat her…”

The barn was quiet, until a huge spur of sounds started. Finally, Chisame opened her window and threw a cup at the barn; it shattered and scared the animals to silence. Seconds later however, the ruckus started up again. The animals inside finally calmed down minutes later, when a familiar cat entered the barn. It was as if the yellow striped cat had authority over the animals. However, what shocked the animals was the little hamster in the cat’s mouth. She went into a stable and put down the hamster on a fluff of hay.

Natsumi was unconscious and several of the creatures feared that she might’ve been dead. Haruna entered poked her head through the stable’s door along with Konoka. Seconds later, Setsuna followed.

“Um, Ku Fei?” Haruna started, her voice was but a whisper.

The cat turned her head around, an angry meow could be heard. There was a bottle of barbeque sauce sitting beside her. The cats tail wagged around a bit and finally gave all her attention to the penguin, crane, and koala.

”What do you want-aruyo!?” The cat spoke. Her voice wasn’t very scary, in fact it sounded quite childish and a little high, in a way. Yet her tone wasn’t exactly happy either, she tapped her paw in impatience.

Setsuna chuckled as Konoka silently persuaded her to talk to Ku Fei. The cat didn’t look scary either, nor did the voice, but something there give the feline authority over the other animals. She licked her lips as she was waiting.

“Uh, do you have to eat Natsumi-san?” Setsuna finally said. The cat made a death glare at the crane, as if she had been insulted.

“No, not really-aru.”

There was silence in the barn. What Ku Fei had just said was not expected, so they were standing there with mixed thoughts for a while. Finally, the three animals huddled and whispered something to each other.

Setsuna asked, “Then why are you about to eat her?”

Ku Fei suddenly laughed much to the crane’s dismay, and rubbed her chin with a devilish smile on her face. She nodded for a bit, making some sort of approval sound come out of her mouth.

“I’ve always wanted the nikuman the girl in the house eats sometimes. She told me one day that I’ll never get to eat people food-arune. It makes me sad,” the feline started, “finally I annoyed her so much that she said, ‘for every mouse you kill, you can have one’. I figured why leave a dead mouse to waste, so I will eat the mouse as well-aru.”

”Natsumi isn’t a mous—“

”That is not the point-aruyo!” Ku Fei yelled loudly, “the only thing that’ll make me stop eating rodents are canaries-aruyo!”

“Canaries?”

”Yellow birds, they’re the rarest yet tastiest bird for all cats-arune,” Ku Fei said in a more solemn tone, “even better, canary in a nikuman. In fact if I one day have a canary, I will never bother you all again-aru.”

”And that was what the cat said,” Haruna explained, nodding to her story, “we told her if she let Natsumi go, if we ever see a canary, we’ll bring it to her. She agreed, too! We thought we’d never have to do our side of the deal because there are never canaries around here, which is good! She let Natsumi go that day, but continued chasing after her since we haven’t found a canary yet! If only we could, Natsumi wouldn’t have to go through this horror!”

Setsuna was about to speak up, when she suddenly stopped herself. Haruna hadn’t realized that Kazumi was in fact, a canary, and Setsuna was about to tell her that. She then realized that if she told her, Haruna and the local cow would take the bird and send her to Ku Fei in seconds.

This was a good day for Setsuna actually…

I finally gave it a title. "Happy Farm Friends". Ripped it off the very bloody and violent Happy Tree Friends.
