Chapter 4: The Hunt
Notes before story is written: Ku Fei is not really in character in this story, later on she will be but her role right now is more of “the cat” than Ku Fei. Kazumi isn’t too in character either but it’s kind of hard to do that since I never heard of a journalist canary…I’ll try something. Same with several other animals…
-
Silence filled the room once more. Natsumi wanted to run away from the cat so badly but the large paws prevented her from doing so. Finally, Kazumi jumped off her nest and walked towards the hungry, hungry kitty-cat. She stopped at the cat’s front foot and looked up.
“I suppose I know what you’re deciding, canary, to be eaten-arune?” Ku Fei assumed.
Kazumi replied in a solemn tone, “You’re right.”
”No, don’t do it for me,” Natsumi shook, “please don’t!”
Surprisingly, Natsumi saw the last expression she’d think of appearing on Kazumi’s face. The canary grinned at her, winking at the same time. Ku Fei didn’t see the face Kazumi had just made, and was about to do the deed when suddenly, the canary took out a very sharp piece of hay she found in a random hay stack earlier and jammed it into Ku Fei’s paw.
”REOW-ARU!!!!”
Grabbing the hamster beside her, the canary ran through the distracted cat’s legs and out the barn. For a bird, Kazumi was shockingly fast as she dragged the rodent behind her down the hill away from the barn. Seeing this action, the others decided to try to distract Ku Fei as well, including throwing cow food, hay, and other things in the farm at the feline. The distraught cat cut through the barn, running from the various things being thrown at her and out the door. She was heading straight towards the fleeing canary and hamster.
”That was incredibly reckless, Kazumi-saaaaaaan!” Natsumi yelled as they were running for their lives.
Kazumi grinned yet again, “It definitely was, but we’re still alive aren’t we!?”
They ran towards the river, a large stream of water not far south from the farm. Jumping onto an oversized leaf, the little critters took their wings or paws or whatever type of limb they had and paddled for their lives. Ku Fei reached the river and ran on the side of it, never leaving her dinner out of sight. In the air, Setsuna was flying and holding Konoka in her talons as they viewed the scene. Yue was holding onto Haruna with difficulty.
“Tell me where you want to land!” Yue said, struggling to stay in the air.
Haruna looked at the river and finally answered, “Oh! Here! Here!”
Yue then dropped the penguin and sighed in relief. The penguin however, was not as satisfied as the owl was.
”Aaaaaah! I said put me down here! Not drop me!” Haruna cried as she hopelessly flapped her flippers in the air, dropping down towards the river faster than a peregrine falcon.
SPLASH!
”Paru-chan! Are you okay?” Konoka shouted, with a bit of worry in her voice.
The penguin resurfaced and made a gesture with a flipper, indicating that she was fine. Haruna then dived into the water, swimming furiously towards the canary and hamster whom were disappearing into the distance fast.
Natsumi was clinging on the brittle leaf with her life, and suddenly picked up something with her sensitive hearing. Turning around, the hamster saw the end of the river in the distance, but the sound she heard was similar to a…
“WATERFALL!” The hamster pointed, her jaw opened and her eyes widened.
Ku Fei jumped onto a rock between her future lunch and the waterfall, ready to swipe at them before they would fall down to their doom. The cat licked her limps while the canary and hamster tried to paddle against the current but with no luck. They were slowly heading towards the hungry feline. Haruna tried to swim faster but if she did she’d go pass the panicking prey for the cat and down the waterfall.
The canary and hamster were at the cat’s reach when another animal popped up between them and stopped the paw from reaching the animals on the leaf. Its larger body lifted up the leaf, and as a result, also the canary and hamster, and floated towards land. The bird and rodent were safe at the time being. The yellow bird stared into the river as the creature swam away. It looked just like a seal.
”SEAL!” Haruna yelped and swam even faster against the current. Seals were penguin’s natural predators. The seal was swimming faster towards the panicking penguin though, and finally the penguin turned around and decided that going down the waterfall would be a better death than being eaten alive. Oddly enough, the seal also turned around and both creatures were washed down the aquatic cliff, into the ravine below.
“PARU-CHAN!” Konoka gasped. Yue dropped down fast towards the bottom of the waterfall. The penguin resurfaced, but the current was much more powerful and she couldn’t swim in any direction.
Suddenly, the seal pushed her towards shore and the penguin collapsed onto the sand. The seal then came onto land as well.
”AGH! SEAL! IT’S ALL OVER FOR ME! NO CONTINUE BUTTON!” Haruna screamed, holding her flippers out as a means of last defence.
The seal was about to speak, when Yue flew down between them, “Don’t be afraid Haruna. This is Nodoka.”
”Yes, um, you dropped this pointy stick that you always walk around with. Uh, I wanted to return it to you,” the seal said, her voice was incredibly gentle to be a predator’s voice.
Ku Fei peered down the waterfall, and then saw the others distracted and leapt onto land. She ran off towards the direction where Kazumi and Natsumi ran off to. Just then, the cow, Chizuru, walked up to the animals at the bottom of the waterfall.
”I hate to interrupt your meeting, but my beloved useless Natsumi and that yellow bird is still being chased by the kitty cat,” Chizuru mentioned in a bold voice.
Ako cried, “Oh no! Oneechan!”
Setsuna raised her wing, “Quiet. We have to save them but we can’t just run off unorganized and silly. We need a plan, a smart one.”
”Secchan is right!” Konoka agreed, hugging the crane and also causing the certain crane’s cheeks to flare into a tomato red colour.
”This is what we do.”
-
Kazumi wasn’t running as fast as she usually did, or Natsumi would fall behind. They were swiftly going through the woods, not exactly knowing what direction they were going. Suddenly, the speedy canary stopped, causing the hamster to run into her from behind.
”You’re a little clumsy, Natsumi-chan!” Kazumi stated, “And anyway, since I’m faster. You should go that way while I stay here and distract that mean kitty!”
”But Kazumi-san! That’s risky!” Natsumi countered, “and what if she catches you?”
The canary grinned, “Asakura Kazumi doesn’t die that easily.”
”Ehh? Why do you need a last name?” Natsumi suddenly pondered. A sweatdrop was summoned by Kazumi who sighed and pushed the hamster towards a different direction.
”Best that you tell the others what direction I’ll be going! Or I’m dead—“
”But you just said you didn’t die that easi—“
”You’re going to be dead meat when I catch you-aruyooooooo!!!!!” The sound of an angry feline could be heard from the distance.
Kazumi shoved the hamster into the bushes and ran onto the trail the cat was on. She stood there and taunted the tigery-animal, then jotted off, with Ku Fei closely behind her. They ran deeper and deeper into the forest until they came upon a clearing. Kazumi quickly continued to flee until she bumped into something and fell backwards. She rubbed her head from the impact.
”Oww, Natsumi-chan’s clumsiness is contagious—“
“Ooooh…a canary…” An unfamiliar voice muttered above her.
Kazumi peered up, and a huge cat, twice the size of Ku Fei, was standing right in front of her. Unlike Ku Fei who had stripes, this animal had many spots all over her body. She was one of the scariest things the canary had ever seen. The bird walked backwards slowly but then found herself to be backing up into Ku Fei.
Ku Fei growled, “Hey! This bird is mine! Go find your own prey-arune!”
”I am larger and definitely much more powerful, elegant, and beautiful than you, you mere housecat!” The huge wildcat spoke. Her voice screamed an apparent beauty and elegance from it.
“Ehh? What does being pretty have to do with anything, aru?” The smaller cat questioned.
The big cat raised her paw, a claw protruding from it, “It has to do with everything! Only a moron would think otherwise!”
”Who do you think you are-ne!?” Ku Fei spat. She didn’t like this cat at all.
”My name is Ayaka, but the jungle calls me lincho!” The big cat roared.
”That’s a pretty dumb name-arune. Sounds like a representative in a group learning similar studies-aru.”
Ayaka snarled, “That is the most outrageous claim ever! Lincho is a human word, yes, and although no one in this forest knows what it means, it definitely does not mean something as silly as that! Now as a bigger feline, therefore I am superior to you. That means the canary is officially mine!”
The huge cat swiped at Kazumi, who jumped out of the way just in time and landed behind Ku Fei’s paw. The smaller cat growled and jumped at the big cat. They fought in a dust cloud, but surprisingly enough the larger feline backed off. She seemed to be extremely upset with something.
”How dare you attack my face! The next time we meet, you will pay dearly for what you have done! Now I have to fix up the damage!” The large cat yelled, then she leapt off into the dark trees.
”What a weird cat-aru…” Ku Fei started. She noticed Kazumi trying to quietly slip away.
The striped-animal leapt at Kazumi and slammed her paw down on the canary, trapping her. Kazumi struggled under the weight of the paw, but to no avail. The cat looked at the little hopeless bird that she had finally caught. Such a bird was a completely delicacy to all felines, so she couldn’t blame lincho for wanting the bird as well. Ku Fei opened her mouth and was about the bite off the canary’s head off when she stopped.
”Aru! Ita! Ita!” The cat cried. She lifted up her other paw and a sharp thorn had burrowed itself deep into the limb. The cat licked her paw, trying to lessen the pain.
”You must’ve gotten that while fighting that big dumb cat there,” Kazumi said, “ah! I know! I’ll pull it out!”
Without even asking, Kazumi managed to reach the cat’s other paw and literally ripped the thrown right out of the foot. A stream of crimson liquid followed, then a cry of pain from the cat herself. She then licked her paw again, and miraculously it started the feel better, even though the rip was extremely painful.
”Why did you do that-aruka!?” The cat asked loudly.
Kazumi chuckled nervously, “Uh…it was an automatic reaction?” Her answer was not very stable, since she really didn’t know why she pulled it out in the first place.
Ku Fei lifted her paw off Kazumi and continued to tend to her injury, “Well thanks, it feels better-aru.”
”Oi? You letting me free or something!?”
”A smart bird would’ve run off by now,” Ku Fei said, “you’re only free to go if you bring me that hamster.”
”What? No way! Eat me now then!” Kazumi argued. Ku Fei refused, and the canary attempted to jump into the cat’s mouth herself, much to the feline’s dismay.
Ku Fei sighed, “I mean if your hamster friend pretended that she was dead-arune, then I could bring her to Chisame-sama and she would give me a nikuman-aru!”
”…and how can I trust you?”
”Look at my face-aru, and tell me I’m lying!” Ku Fei shouted.
”…you’re lying.”
Ku Fei sighed, but then heard a ruckus from behind her. A horde of animals surrounded them, all smaller than the kitty-cat. They sat there just staring at the large group.
”If you eat Kazumi-san, we will have no choice but to attack!” Setsuna yelled, acting as the leader of the animals.
Ku Fei smiled, “On one condition…”
